I have naturally curly hair. It's fine but there's tons of it, so it appears thick. We moved into a new house recently - back in May - and I noticed immediate hair loss within the first week or so. My hair was falling out in clumps. I thought it might have been the water or stress or damage from using the straightening iron, but now I'm starting to think it's from the PCOS. My LH level is 4 and my TSH level is at 1. That seems fairly low to me, but I'm wondering if all of this goes hand in hand. I'm in panic mode right now.
The hair loss was frightening, actually. Now it's stabalized. So, my question is is it possible for the hair loss to just start overnight and to continually get worse over time? I'm really scared right now.
once in my early 20's my hair thinned out loads came out in clumps in the bath etc but then thickened up again over a year or 2, i only got diagnosed last year so not sure if the thinning before was pcos related it may have been other factors. i am not sure if you start loosing your hair due to pcos can you get it back or not? i should imagine you could if the hormones are controlled but i could be wrong. so hoping someone knows.
it may have been the stress of the move, change in heating, etc can all effect the hair thats what i put mine down to when it happened 6 years ago, but it may have been related to the pcos i didnt know i had then
at the moment my hair is whispy at the temples but been like that for years, but i know my granny had alopecia and my aunt has a patch, so it does concern me a little bit, but for now i am trying to concentrate on my most prominent symtoms

My doctor says hair loss is not a symptom of PCOS! But I've been reading that it is. All she said was that high androgens can cause male pattern balding. Hair thinning can be due to a number of reasons if its not hormones; wearing hair up constantly (there are cases where people have lost hair at the hairline and apparently its possible that it wont grow back because the follicle is damaged so the only advice given is to stop with tight hairstyles), blow drying, use of heat, lack of protein and vitamins (this is true because my friend had very thick hair until she suffered from anorexia- her hair is so thin now, so I can see first hand that the diet is a huge factor) STRESS (my mother has a bald patch on her scalp somewhere that grows and then fall out again if she's under alot of stress) It can also be genetics.
Anything happen 3 months ago that could be traumatizing to you/your body. Wreck, stress, pregnancy, big weight loss etc? The reason I ask is because when we put our body into a trauma situation it can cause a big hair loss about 3 months later. I had this happen when I lost 60lbs to fast. My body was shocked. Within 3 months my hair starting falling out bad. Went to the dermatologist and everything. All my labs testosterone looked great. I hadnt changed anything other than the weight loss.
Your doctor is wrong - the reason being. A PCOS women is only going to lose her scalp here if she has the genes for hair loss. ie she might find her father, mothers brother, grandfather on either side or brothers having thinnning hair -as they have lots of testosterone.
If she has the same genese and different people in families inherit diffeent genes but lts say she does have the hairloss gene (which means her hair follices are sensitive to free testosterone) she will get hair loss just like her brothers.. whereas without the PCOS her Free Testosterone does not get hight enough to affect her follicles..
So women who have no genetid predisipostion (ie their hair follices are not sensitive to Testostore - the same ones usually have the males in their family with thick hair at 40 50 and 60, will not lose scalp hair even with high androgens such as free testosterone.
The higher leves of T cause the hairloss in some women but whats causes that?? the PCOS!!
SO he is right in that every women with PCOS who comes into his doctors rooms won't have scalp hairloss, WHY - well does everyman lose his hair - and balding men don't have any more T than non balding me. My dad has a full head of thick hair and he is 60. I inherited the hairloss gene from my mother, her father and brother have it and my twin brother. My dad is the lucky one. I am jealous hahah.
I don't know if she meant women don't lose scalp hair or that I wont lose scalp hair- because I specifically asked about my situation, and she said i wouldn't be losing my scalp hair- going by the androgen levels. She said if they are high it can cause male pattern baldness. I said 'thats exactly my worry' and she said your male hormones wouldn't be causing that because they aren't elevated or abnormal, which makes her believe the body hair I complained about is genetic. She said the pill would stop body hair i'm 'supposed to have' from growing anyway. Sucks to be italian.
Thanks for the info about genetics; does that mean with PCOS our t levels, etc are more than that of a normal woman, but are like our male relatives? So is looking at their body hair and scalp hair a good indication of what effect high androgen levels will have on us?
Well, my diet was really poor and I stopped taking vitamins, so that may have had something to do with it, I'm sure. I started taking vitamins again about a month ago, and my hair loss has nearly stopped completely. I'm going to attribute the hair loss to vitamin deficiancy vs. PCOS since it was an isolated case and has ceased.
