Can having Hypothyroidism increase the risk of birth defects/disabilities in fetus?
Hello!
I have PCOS and Hypothyroidism (but I'm being treated for it) and I was wondering if there is still a higher risk of my baby getting birth defects (or a disability) because I have Hypothyroidism, even though I'm being treated for it.
Does anyone know? Has anyone discussed this with their RE?
THANK YOU!!!

HI
I am also hypothryoid and I just had a baby two months and one week ago, there is nothing wrong with her, she is a normal happy healthy baby, They tested her thyroid when they did her PKU test and it was all normal.
Your thyroid is a normal working gland in your body if it isn't working right, the thyroid pill helps it do its job, so your body has to have this hormone so by taking synthyroid, or levexyol all we are doing is putting the syntheic hormone into our body but our body needs it so there is no danger to your baby by taking it while pg. As long as your TSH is normal during pregnancy there is a very slim chance of any birthdefects at all. I do advise you to visit with your dr and have him/her answer your questions. I am breastfeeding and still take my pill my daughter is fine, as they say thyroid drugs are a catagory A, which shows no ill effects to a pg or breastfeeding mom.
Please go check out this web site http://thyroid.about.com/library/news/blguidelines.htm it is where I learned most of my information and btw my TSH was at 4.69 when I got pg with my little girl, I know they say to have a TSH of 1 or 2 but pregnancy can happen at a higher level. I hope I helped answer some of your questions. Good luck

There is a heightened risk to your baby only if your hypothyroid is untreated. They will want to up your dose of medication as soon as you get pregnant. My endo told me he wanted to see me "the minute" I get a positive pregnancy test. Good luck!

Conceived twice by IVF/ICSI/AH, one fresh, one frozen
i did forget to add that if you don't take your pill you could run into problems being pg, My dr was real good at checking my levels every month!!! As long as the hypothroidism is being treated during pg you shouldn't have any problems. If i can help further don't hesitate to email me.
