I've been on Metformin 250 mg for a few days now and I have not felt any symptoms. I realize it's a very low dose. Do you think it would matter if I started taking 500 mg without bugging my doctor? She's going to increase it anyway, why not now?
I know, you guys will probably tell me to call, LOL! But I have to ask anyway since I'm so incredibly new to all of this. I've never had to take strict, prescribed medication before.

Did she tell you to increase it to 500 mg after a certain time? When I first started, my actual prescription was 500 mg, 2x per day. But he told me to start out with one a day, until I got used to it, and then increase to the dosage shown on the bottle.
Here's the problem: if you've only got 250 mg pills, you'll run out twice as fast as you should, so you'd need to put a call in to your doctor anyway for refills, and at that time, you'd have to tell her that you went up in dosage.
Just to be safe, I'd call. Good luck!

I think what I would do is make a trial run. Take one more take today (if you have 250mg tabs). And then if you still have no problems then call the Dr tomorrow and tell her what you did and ask if that was a OK thing to do. Most Drs will be happy to know that you were willing to call about something like that and that you were also willing to do whatever they think is right. On the plus side if you have no problems with the 500mg then you may be getting to a good dose sooner. You know how you Dr feels about things like this, if she is someone who is willing to really listen to you then I would try and then make the call. Or do both today, call and take the second pill. It can take some time to get a phone call back.

I am surprised to hear you started at 250mg and did not have instructions to increase the dose? I think if I remember right, low doses are not as effective as higher, such as 2000mg.
But yes you should talk to your dr!

My dr said the only reason she started me out at a low dosage of 500 was so I didn't go crazy with the side effects. I took 500 once a day the first week, then twice a day the second week, and then three times a day the third week and have stayed at 1500 since then. Metformin can do things to your kidney so maybe she has a low dosage for you based on your tests she did prior to putting you on met. I'd definitely call in case of that.

When my doc started me Met, she prescribed for me to take 1500mg/day. However, she said she first wanted me to start out with only one 500mg pill per day, for at least a few days if not a week. Then add a second pill per day. Then finally work my way up to three per day. She said the reason for this was just to not make me terribly sick (which as soon as I started taking two, I WAS terribly sick, so I understood her point then LoL.) After I worked myself up to three, which took longer than I expected (about three weeks to a month) she started me on the Met ER, which is the full 1500mg dosage taken only once daily. So if this was your doctor's reasoning, then I say step it up whenever you feel you can handle it. My doctor had me do it all in my own time, so maybe that's what you're suppose to do???

I also want to agree with the pp, make sure you call your doc. I also started out on 500, and within a month I was on 1000. Then within in another month I was on 1500 and have been for over a year now. I am looking at talking with my ob about upping it to 2000, since I hear that is one of the best doeses. So I am at least going to ask.
But I do agree have a talk with your doc.
