I've got a bit of Diarrhea and wanted to know if I could use Pepto-Bismol for it.
I asked the pharmacist at Walmart if it would have any effects with the Met and she said that it was sugar free and all but I told her that I was not worried about that because I did not have diabetes. She said that it could by that it would coat my stomach and the met would not absorb the same. But if I had diarrhea that it won't hurt. She said it would not have any adverse effect.
So I just wanted to check with you all about it.

Miss meme,
Great question. I have been using tums smoothies tablets when I can't take the stomach aches any more. It is so soothing. I am anxious to hear from others on this subject.

I have got Walmarts max strength stomach relief, which is their version of pepto bismol. It does say on the bottle to ask a dr or pharmacist if you are taking any drugs for diabetes, arthritis, anticoagulants and gout. I am on Metformin and Arthrotec and Aspirin, and I have never had a problem when I have taken the stuff. I tried looking for any info online about pepto and metformin but coudn't find anything, even when I went to drugstore.com and checked the drug interactions. It's funny I tried pepto bismol about 20 years ago and as soon as i swallowed it, it was back out again.. so didnt touch the stuff again until last year.

I read somewhere that taking anti acids with Metformin blocks it's absorption, so we should avoid taking them. With the side effects with Met though, it's pretty tough. I lived on Pepto for quite a while, I think. LOL. I'm not really sure though if Pepto is considered an anti acid (I know Tums is). Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I did a search on here last night and did find many women are using Pepto. But I did find one thread in which someone said that you should not use it. I'm going to call my pharmacist later today and ask him for sure what he thinks. I trust him pretty much.

I guess one question is how long does it take tums to dissolve in the tummy? I am only taking 1 500mg dose a day but still have acid stomach/heart burn much later in the day. I have noticed if I can get that to stop I don't have the Stinky's later LOL.
Tums does have Calcium so its good for you to. I have heard others take mil with there met so I just assumed it would be the same. Maybe there is a difference between acid blockers, reducers and coating type meds.
Any way if you take imodium try the wal mart brand it is crazy how much $$ you will save compared to the name brand!
