I'm insulin resistant and my mother in law is diabetic. We're both on Met. Recently, she told me that her doctor claimed that a large majority of prescriptions for Insulin Resistance and Diabetes can cause a person to feel hungry all the time. I've noticed for quite some time, even before talking to my mother in law, that I have been feeling ravenously hungry all of the time. I'm watching what I eat, how much and when, but if I don't eat every few hours (at least a small healthy snack--- no more big meals for me!) I go through a kind of weird experience where I literally start shaking and have excess salivation and feel nauseous. I asked my doctor about it. She shrugged it off saying that it's because I'm conditioned that way. I've been eating a restricted diet since April, felt fine for a while, been on Met since March and now I'm feeling this way. It doesn't make sense. I'm on 500 mg of Met (3 X per day) since March. My doctor refuses to re-evaluate my dosage level. I shared this with my mother in law, who then told me about what her doctor said and how she is being switched to a different prescription that does not have this side effect.
Is there any validity to the thought that Met makes you more hungry all the time? Anyone else experience this?
I've experienced quite the opposite--I'm not hungry at all on Met. The pharmacy insert that came with my prescription said a s/e could be loss of appetite. I didn't see anything about increased appetite. Mayber another cyster has the same problem you have...Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!! BTW--Your username gave me a laugh!

I agree with the pp, I am taking Met ER and I have to remind myself to eat. If anything, I'm a bit more thirsty but definitely not hungry.

I do get hungry being on met but never like you. I don't forget to eat by any means and still do have to remember to quit eating when I am full but nothing like you have experienced... but also I have noticed I haven't lost my appetite as i thought i would.
I don't know if this helps! Good luck... It does seem like I have had to learn what to eat and what not to eat because it can make you sick but other than that... nothing!

Interesting. Maybe my dosage is too low? I see other cysters on 1000 mg-1500 mg. I'm on 500 mg, which I've been told is rather low. Many people told me they were started on 500 mg and then moved up in a few weeks. I've been on 500 mg since March and not experiencing any change. I've been dieting religiously since april, exercising regularly and somehow I've managed to gain weight (I've done diets in the past and NEVER gained, I always lost some weight and only gained it back after going off the diet)! My doctor shrugged this off too. Maybe the medication isn't working for me? It's all rather frustrating.
I'm on 750mg of Met XR and have had a loss of appetite. I particularly don't want lunch but that's when I take my met so I force myself to eat something for the metformin. Remember, though, that everybody will respond differently to metformin. For you, your response might be just how your body reacts. Let us know what your doctor says. I assume they've already done basic blood work to check out your symptoms (especially checking your thyroid, electrolytes, and blood counts).

I gained 15 pounds the first time I went on met before I had my son, even though I was eating the same and exercising. I do feel hungrier this time around (just started met again 3 weeks ago) and I have been craving sugar like crazy which is not my usual weakness. I am afraid to get on the scale so I don't know if I have gained.
