Default Can Met stop working?

This might sound dumb, but can Met stop working? I'm on 1000 mg/day and breastfeeding and ttcing #2. My cycles were nice and regular and things seemed okay except that my luteal phases were too short likely due to breastfeeding.

My son is now almost 18 months old and has reduced his nursing sessions to only twice a day over the last 2 months/. I now have gained 5 pounds this past month! My eating is about the same, exercise is about the same. In fact, I might actually be eating less calories than before.

I noticed my skin is really breaking out again and that my fertility seems lowered - I am taking longer than usual to ovulate this month and have no fertile symptoms (to be polite I won't get graphic).

Should my Met be increased? When we were ttcing our son I was on 1500 mg/day. But the fact that 1000 mg was working stopped us from going up to the 1500.

Any ideas? Would reducing nursing by 1 session a day have caused a 5 pound weight gain??

Also - the first time I was on Met I lost weight. This time, I have not lost any.

Hi, I am TTC #1 but I can tell you my experience. I am taking 1000mg a day and I havent seen an Ovulation on my chart yet. So I dont think met has started to work on me and I have been taking it since end of August. Either you have to wait until it kicks in to start working or you need something else like clomid. Good Luck

Well, Met was working though. I've had five regular cycles with it and now suddenly it isn't working. Maybe it wasn't the Met in the first place? I'm so frustrated. This really sucks.

I'm starting to worry about this also. I've only been on met for about a month (1000mg). The first two weeks I had no appetite and lost 2 or 3 pounds. Now that the side effects have worn off, I seem to be gaining weight. My appetite is back with a vengance. The only thing I've noticed is that my acne is a little better. I'm not sure if I just haven't been on it long enough or if maybe I need a larger dose..??? When I started the met, I was optimistic for the first time in a long time, but I'm starting to get anxious again.

Hi all,

Lilredcat,

I had the same problem...Met (1000 MG, then 1500 MG) started off great and worked like a charm for about a year and some change, then it suddenly stopped working...no AF, my skin began to break out, and I started to gain weight even though I didn't have the worst diet and I was active...then the vicious cycle of weight gain, depression, and no AF started again...During the first AF absence while on Met, I thought I was pregnant since it stopped it's usual clockwork pattern...

It is my belief that our bodies get used to something and need more of it, similar to an addiction, you no longer get the same 'high' so your body expects a higher dosage...Just my theory...

My doc has taken me off of Met since it wasn't helping anymore...I am currently making the best of natural remedies!

Same here, it's used to work like a charm on 1500mg. My cycles gradually became longer and longer after about a year, and now they're pretty erratic. I've just upped my dose to 2000mg in a self-prescribed trial, but am going to ask at my next appointment what the deal is - that's in February.
