Unhappy Can Met Stop Working? (bit long soz)

Hello Girls

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am really concerned that my Met has stopped working. I started on 500mg about a year ago and the side effects were horrid, so it took me ages to get up to 1000mg. But when i did - my periods regulated, my hair growth slowed down considerably, my metabolism seem to speed up (in that i had regular bowel movements for the first time ever) and my spots dissapeared apart from the week of AF. I also stopped bloating.

However, (why does there always have to be a however ;-( LOL) I have just had a 76 day cycle, am spotty, my hair on my chin is growing happily and i am soo constipated. I am so dissapointed because it was all going so well!. I know that the therapeutic dose is 1500mg, but my GP in England is loath to put me up to that dose (we still have probs with Met over here!) but I wondered if I could share some of your stories, then I'd have more fuel for a dose increase.

Also I am really worried that a dose increase will work for a while and then stop working again? Please help!

Thank you girls x

Can I ask what your diet is like? My diet actually counter-acted the drug until I started eating to control my insulin. My periods were still 70+ days and irregular until I started the IR diet and they have been regular (28-32 days) ever since, so I will never doubt what I put in my mouth again.

Also, is your Dr drawing bloodwork to see where your hormones are at? Symptoms are only part of the puzzle, and he needs to draw blood in order to see if things are getting worse.

As for the dosage, it is sad that your Dr is willing to put you on it and not consider the minimum medical dose...1500 mg. If he is not giving you the minimum dose that can help, what's the point?! There is some info on the dosing in the FAQ thread at the top of the metformin forum..maybe print up some of those studies on 1500 mg and see if he will consider a trial of 3 mos or something. I'm really sorry that the UK is so hesitant...it is one of the safest, most tested drugs out there right now.

I wish you the best of luck.

Christy.

Thank you for your reply. I am not on any particular diet but haven't tollerated carbs (or craved) since starting Met so don't eat many and have lost about 20lbs so thought it would be improving?
Gonna nag my Dr using the info u pointed me towards - Thank u!
Dr has drawn bloods, but didn't get back to me, so I assume they were normal!
Thank u again x

If they have improved is more significant right now than if they are normal. You just want to see if they are moving in the right direction at this point and if that dose is doing the job.

You might want to talk to your Dr again...perhaps the prozac is playing a part too. Antidepressants can affect weight in that they chnage basal metabolic rate without changing caloric intake. and they may affect hormonal changes and increase appetite.

Good luck Tracy!
