Default Can This Be It?! PCOS?

Hello All!

I stumbled on to this forum while searching for info about PCOS. What great info here! My daughter, 14 years old, has been fainting for 1 1/2 years. We have been to cardiologists, neurologists, etc. had every test imaginable. She has symptoms of Hypoglycemia but the doctors have been reluctant to diagnose that. Our pediatrician finally referred us to an Endocrinologist's office. Actually for dietician advice since she has put on weight the last couple of years. Hard to understand how though - she watches what she eats and she is very active in sports. We have tried to load up on carbs because of the hypoglycemia symptoms though. So how much carbs are good or too much has been our question?! Anyway, the PA that we saw mentioned that PCOS was a possibility. I don't think I've ever heard of it. Looking at the symptoms, she seems to have several of them. She keeps weight around her waist and upper thighs, always hungry and thirsty, dizziness, anxiety.

My question is - do others have fainting associated with this? What about heartburn - is that a symptom?

Sorry for rambling - I have 12 jillion questions. We are going to have the 2 hour glucose done this week. (Will that test show results about PCOS?) And test her blood every time she feels faint or shaky.

Thanks,

Hi Lisa

Welcome. The glucose tolerance test won't dx pcos by itself by will be able to tell you if she is diabetic or insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is common in PCOS I would think both could cause fainting. Has your daughter started her period yet? And if she has do they seem to be normal? When you see the Endo I'm sure they will test all her hormones. If she has PCOS her testosterone will be elevated. If you have any other questions I'm sure someone here will have the answer for you. My daughter was just dx with PCOS recently and I'm still learning but if I can help in any way I'm here. Good luck to you and your daughter!

Cathy

Thanks for the help guys. She has been having her period for about 2 years now. Has always been abnormal - doctors never seem concerned about that.

Thanks,
Lisa
