Question Can pregnancy cause thyroid problems?

Hi ladies. I'm new to this board and I have a question. I had my 6 week postpartum checkup yesterday and my OB/GYN said that my thyroid felt enlarged. She said that it could just be a "postpartum thing" and that it could go back to normal, but to see my PCOS dr. and get it checked out. Did this happen to anyone else? Should I be worried?

Pregnancy can definitely play havoc on your thyroid. I was already hypo when I got pregnant but had to adjust my dose a couple of times during pregnancy and post-partum.

It may also be that your thyroid is just starting to act up, coincidentally with your pregnancy. Anyway, good luck to you!

I had postpartum thyroiditis following a m/c at 11 weeks... it can happen after birth or after a m/c. What generally happens is that your thyroid gets hyper for a short while and then crashes to hypo and then generally gets better to a milder hypo or totally normal depending. Most of the time, the hyper stage is not treated but the hypo stage is treated with synthroid. I am taking that now and finally have a normal TSH etc. It's important that you get your levels checked and get on synthroid if needed when the time comes. Good luck!

Heather,
After the birth of my sister, my Mom went into hypothyroid that went undiagnosed for a long time. She cried and screamed more than her baby. Finally, as she became frustrated that she couldn't get pregnant again, the doctor took one look at her and sent her home with thyroxin. Two weeks later, I was conceived. During that pregnancy, her thyroid went back to normal and has been ever since.
[I have always suspected mild hypo for her and me both, however, and that's why I'm on kelp.]
Best wishes, and Congratulations on the Big Boy!
Sheri
