Question Can RE control which side you ovulate from?

I went in yesterday for my consulatation after my HSG, which apparently revealed a blocked right tube. However, my doctor said that it may have been a spasm, because of where it was blocked. He said the dye started to go in and then stopped completely on that side. He said I had a choice to do a lap..I said no.
He then said that without knowing for sure if its a spasm, if I take the injects, he will still have to follow protocol as if that tube were blocked, even if it isnt. He said he will try to make my clear tubes ovary produce the big follicles.
How can he control what side grows what follicles? And what happens if a tube is completely blocked and you ovulate from that side, does it pose risks? I wouldnt think an ectopic would be possible if the tube is blocked totally.
Hubby and I sat down and watched a video on Follistim and we handled the pen and are set to start the injects at the end of the month. Turns out my insurance pays for diagnosis and the meds, but not the ultrasounds and labwork, which comes to 1200 bucks! Ugh...
So all in all, he said I need a lap and he will let us try one round of Follistim with IUI and that if it doesnt get a BFP, I have to have the lap. Sucks

Can I ask why you don't want to do the lap?
And as far as I know, they can't really manipulate which side you ovulate from, unless I've missed something from all my reading on IF treatments. Otherwise, I'd be on that bandwagon as soon as I could, as I do only have one tube left.

I don't think they can make one side O. I would just do the lap to make sure everything is ok before starting injects since it costs a lot.

I don't have any experience with injectables but I was wondering if your RE thinks that the "blockage" may be a spasm, could they do a repeat HSG instead of a lap? I read your previous post about the experience and I am so sorry that you had such a painful one. My RE called me in a script for Valium and I took 1000 mg of ibuprofen half an hour before the procedure and i didn't have any issues. I would think if they gave you something to relax you they would be able to tell whether or not it's a true blockage without a lap. I know a lot of ladies on the board have had laps and it seems that most of them went very smoothly, so if you do end up going that route you will definitely have a lot of support. Best of luck and keep us posted!

They can't control the side you Ov from... they can try to get you to make lots of follicles in the hopes that the open side makes some- but they can't pick and chose which side to do. You just get what you get, sometimes one ovary takes off and the other doesn't, sometimes one starts and stops, and the other shoots off with follicles. In other words, they would try to give you more follicles than a woman who has two tubes... which of course means that if it was just a spasm, then you may be at high risk for HOMs...

I would also think another HSG or a LAP would be in order, but of course that is a personal decision. I don't know if your insurance is like mine, and wouldn't cover a repeat HSG, or not, etc...

Spasms can be common and have no detrimental effects on TTC- it just happens during the HSG sometimes. But, if the tube is partially blocked, it can increase chances of ectopic. If it is blocked, it can decrease your chances of concieving if you Ov on that side, because there's only like a 1-3% chance of the other tube getting to that ovary.

Hope that helps.

I had my left tube removed and it turns out I only O on that side if I'm unmedicated. Even on the meds I still O on the left side but they can get one or two on the right side going too. My left side gets ready a lot faster than the right so I have to take Ganirelix to keep me from ovulating until the right side can catch up. Last month I ended up having six follicles on the left side and one on the right. But at least I got one! However, it turned out to be BFN and I ended up having four cysts at my baseline. SO - if I had the option to do a lap and have a tube on the left side - I would! But most people aren't like me and ovulate pretty evenly side to side so they have a good chance even with a blocked tube.

As far as if it's dangerous... My doc said there is a very small possibility that an egg from the left side could wander over to the right tube. But she didn't mention that there was any danger of the eggs getting fertilized but not having anywhere to go.

Good Luck!

My RE said that I would have no benefit from the lap, which is part of the reason I dont want to do it. He said the only reason to do it is to find out if the blockage was real or just a spasm. He didnt mention anything about fixing the problem if there was one. I just cant fathom going through an unneccesary surgery BEFORE trying injects a couple of times. They put me on the surgery list for early next year, and he said hopefully the injects will work and I can cancel the surgery. I guess I have a lot of time to think about it!
