Hi Sarah,
I'm a thyroid cancer survivor and had two surgeries to remove my thyroid. The first (a partial thyroidectomy to remove the right lobe containing the malignant nodule) was in June 2004, and the second (complete thyroidectomy to remove the remaining left lobe) was in July 2004.
I'd had five major abdominal surgeries prior to the operations, so to me the thyroidectomies were a piece of cake. I was back to work within 72 hours of the first surgery. However, if you've never even had your wisdom teeth removed, the prospect of someone manipulating such a vunerable part of your body is definitely nerve-wracking!
The pain associated with the incision site is neglible- I didn't even need to fill the prescription my doctor gave me for Codeine. The worst part is the extreme neck stiffness (which can cause pain) from restricting head movement so the incision can heal properly. This only lasted about five days following both surgeries.
If you have any more questions, feel free to message me. Good luck!
