Default Can someone tell me the advantages of Avandia and Metformin?

I go to my RE on July 19th and want to ask him about Avandia but can't seem to find any information about it in regards to PCOS, only diabetes. Can someone lend me some helpful information please.

Question

After reading various posts on here and doing some extra research across the internet, I discovered that Avandia may cause weight gain and/or swelling! As i need to lose a good 40 lbs. i think i will inquire about the Glucophage XR, instead!

The Glucophage XR is a pill you take once a day but has the same beneficial effects as the normal Glucophage. The side effects from the Gluc sounds much better than the Avandia ones! The Gluc side effects are nausea (controllable when you eat with the meds and have ginger in some form), diarhhea (which my mom said subsided after 2 weeks, just stick w/it), and loss of appetite...HELLLLLLOOOOO! this doesn't sound so bad. And so many sisters on this board have also lost weight with this! This is all good.

I have an appt this afternoon with my pcp. she is more concerned with my high trigycerides than my sugar or pcos. Boy, do i have alot to say about that! I have printed off reams of information to prove to her that they're all interconnected.

Once I convince her that the high cholesterol is connected to the Insulin Resistance and that is connected to the PCOS...perhaps she will finally be convinced. She told me last time i saw her that she wasn't concerned about my borderline diabetes (i am 6.0 right on the border), but just my cholesterol!!! I really think if i take the Gluc/met i will improve in the cholesterol area too, right?

She had me on Lipitor 10mg a day and she has upped that to 20mg a day. I started this on Wednesday, it is now Friday. I think the Lipitor in combo with the gluc is all i need. Would you agree? I would love some feedback on this, as all this is still new to me.

On a side note. I am currently 5 weeks post hysterectomy opertaion. They took EVERYTHING out, tubes, ovaries, uterus, and cervix. I had a mess in there! The bad news...I realized afterwards that the PCOS is still with me! (It stems mainly from your adenal gland not the ovaries) I was bummed out about that for a couple weeks. But I am a fighter. This PCOS won't beat me.

Thanks for listening and please give me your input. Would relly love to hear your opinions regarding the gluc/met helping with the high cholesterol battle. Thanks!

Talking Great to see such well informed cysters!!!

Yes, there are studies that have linked Avandia to some weight gain. I doesn't directly cause it, but for some reason, it can contribute to easy weight gain for some people. Also, some patients have had some trouble with edema (water retention) in extremities, and in some cases around the heart. Some studies have further shown that a combination of Avandia and met may help alleviate the problem, and there is a combo drug out there called Avandamet. Some cysters do not respond well to met or do not have good results with it, and some docs have tried other Type II diabetes drugs with success. For some of us, it's just trying until you find the solution that works for you. The Best thing to do is what you are doing right here...read and learn all you can. I'm proud of you for arming yourselves with knowledge!
