i've read the occassional brief reference to thyroid problems causing hypertrichosis (increased hair growth in non-androgen dependent sites).
however - apart from the references themselves - i haven't been able to find any detailed info.
has anyone else heard about this, and can shed some advice?
i'm asking because although i have excess hair just about everywhere, the place that bothers me 100 times more than anywhere else is my forearms - hairier than a mans :-(
however from what i've read, the forearm hair isn't related to incresed androgens - have i got that right? i know that when my specialist gave me a score for my hirsutism, the hair on my forearm didn't count. he said that arm hair was only considered to be 'medically hirsute' if it was prominant from the elbow upwards.
but my problem is from the elbow down!
so if anyone has any light to shed on this that would be great.
i would also be interested to find out how many women out there with hyper/hypo-thyroidism have excess forearm hair.
thanks!

I have a lot of forearm hair but I don't know if I'd label it excessive. It's more than I'd like, certainly. But then, I have a lot of leg hair too. Come to think of it, I know a lot of men with hairy arms/legs to go along with their beards so I'd pretty much say it could have very much to do with the testosterone! Don't know what your doc is smokin'!
My naturopath has very hairy arms and I don't think she's packin either a dx of pcos OR hypothyroidism.. so it seems to me like quite the quandary!

I haven't heard anything about thyroid disease causing hariness, but PCOS certainly does! We PCOS ladies have much higher levels of testosterone and therefore exhibit male pattern hariness (face, chest, abdomen, back, and extra hair on arms and legs).
