I hope this doesn't come across as some totally stereotypical question you'd ask a bunch of Australians here... I'm serious!
A while ago I bought a jar of vegemite and a jar of marmite because I wanted to try them. I did... then then they got pushed to the back of the shelf and forgotten... now they're expired. Yeah, it was QUITE a while ago... 2 years or so...
The thing is they smell fine. They look fine. They're so salty, can they really go bad??
I wanted to try making vegemite meatloaf. I could buy more but should I?

I just looked at my marmite (Sanitarium brand) and its got an expiry date of May 2010. I bought it a few months back so I'd say they are good to eat for about 2 years after you buy it. I'd be more worried if the consistency had changed and some liquid was sitting on the top or something.
A vegemite meatloaf sounds great! I've never used it in a 'mains' dish like that. My favourites are vegemite/marmite scrolls.

So on closer inspection... the vegemite actually had no expiration date on it. The marmite had an expiration date of Nov 06 - which makes me look back and wonder, hmmm, was it expired when I bought it?? Could have been on the shelf forever, as there's not exactly a run on the stuff here in the states.
At any rate I used the vegemite and it was possibly the best meatload I ever made, LOL. I usually make it with onion soup mix, I wanted to try something different. My son even had seconds, and he hates everything!
But now explain to me... you are in NZ... do you have marmite there? I always thought vegemite = NZ/Oz, and Marmite was more in Britain. I mean obviously you can get them in other places, or I wouldn't be buying them here at all, but help me out with my yeast extract geography here...

errrr, the oldest I ate was like 10 years past its use by date, the taste wasn't perfect, but it didn't make me sick. It takes forever to use a jar so I say eat it, its the best stuff for ya!!!

I checked our Vegemite jars, and they actually *do* have an expiration date on them. we keep our opened Vegemite in the fridge. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it's what my SIL and MIL do.
I use the stuff to make "everything but the kitchen sink" hamburgers - to 1.25 to 1.5 pounds of good quality ground beef, add:
optional: 1/2 diced onion, raw or grilled (I like red onion)
Mix together, divide into patties, cook as usual. Unlike "straight" ground beef, this mixture will not shrink up much - you'll want to form your patties pretty much the shape and size that you want them to be when done cooking.
It makes really juicy, flavorful burgers.
You can use the same mixture for meatloaf - though I tend to put a "tunnel" of extra grated cheese down the center of the loaf, and brush the entire thing with tomato sauce.

I Love avo and and vegemite on toast. It's fantastic!
Also just don't mix Vegimite and Marmite together. It can cause a massive allergic reaction in some people. My brother did it to my Dad as a joke. Wasn't too funny! Lord nows why but there you go. Also vegemite on celery. Delish.
Taste great on toasted hoop snakes and Drop Bear roasts to.
He he

So... maybe they don't put exp. dates on jars for export out of fear they won't sell fast enough... or maybe mine is just so old it predates them using dates, LOL
That recipe is similar to the one I followed for the meat loaf. Only thing is I tried to print it and the printer wasn't working, so by the time I got downstairs I forgot about the cheese... then while I was mixing things up my son locked one of the babies in the bathroom and I forgot about the carrot in that fiasco. Will remember those two next time, might add mustard, too.
Probably wouldn't like it as burgers, though - I like my burgers bland! DH used to put thyme in them until I finally got him to stop, LOL

Oooh, you would be hating it around my house when my hubby goes into full-tilt "Aussie Burger" mode - fried egg, beet root, sprouts. . . it's a veritable salad on a bun. Plus some meat.

I have no idea to be honest! Its probably like the Pav and phar lap. Originally from New Zealand but we share the origins with the Aussies hehehehe

Drop Bear roasts?!?! When i first went to aussie to live for a stint by friends tried to tell em to watch out for the drop bears which fell out of the trees and landed on you bahahaha.... Not that i believed em... but its a crack up to see you write that!!
And also.... What happens if you mix them together?!?!
Ive never ever heard of that!!!
Yeah... Marmite in NZ, Vegemite is aussie and Promite is english....
I didnt know America was selling any of them... we send them over to friends in Amercia because they said they dont sell it there?!?!
It's not like you can find it in every supermarket here, but you can find it. I bought it while we were living in California for like $3 a jar ... was surprised now we moved to Pennsylvania and the local grocery store has a pretty big "international" aisle, though they don't seem to have Vegemite. They have Marmite, though, but it's like $6-7 a jar, so it's like twice as much as in CA.
