Just wondering if you can adopt after you have had Cancer?
We already know a girl who is having a baby that she doesn't want, but I am not sure if it is too soon after getting rid of my Cancer, or if we should wait a year or so before considering adoption?
Thanks.

As long as your doctor can say that you are healthy with no health concerns I'm sure you will be fine.
(just a tip, don't say they a birthmother doesn't want her child...she's making an adoption plan)

Most agencies will work with cancer Survivors, but it depends how far out from your last treatment and remission you are. I suggest that you contact them to find out what their policies are for working with couples where one spouse is a cancer Survivor. You should ask how far from treatment they desire the Survivor to be, and what constitues treatment (surgery, radiation/chemo, medications taken after radiation/chemo to help prevent cancer from returning). You will need a letter from your doctor stating that you are expected to have a normal life expentancy, are in good health, your long-term prognosis is excellent, and your cancer history will not prevent you from being a fit parent. Your social worker should be able to give you more specifics about what your agency would like to hear from your doctor...as long as it's true!
We were able to adopt our son from Korea after my thyroid cancer diagnosis. I wasn't cancer free, but my doctors never thought I would be...just at a point where it was maintained. During our wait for referral, I had a third surgery that rid my body of the disease. Thyroid cancer is different thought since it is rarely fatal and very treatable, but my case was unusual but our agency (WACAP, who I love!) still worked with us!
I don't think Miss Meme was slapping your wrist, there is just more appropriate adoption language you should consider using in the future. No child wants to hear they were unwanted, whether it is true or not. And it's always good to practice before your child arrives.
Best of luck with your adoption!
Cynthia

Whether it was her words or not, PLEASE learn more positive language and don't repeat negative things. There are plenty of other more positive terms you could have used. You will do well, if you are serious about adoption, to do some research into it.
