Default Can you have a thyroid condition with normal numbers?

All my thyroid levels have been checked, and my numbers are well within the normal range, but I'm exhausted all the time, moody, and having difficulty losing weight even though I've been doing Weight Watchers to the letter and exericsing religiously 6-7 days a week. None of my docs will take me seriously because my numbers are okay? Is it possible to have a thyroid condition when numbers are normal?

did they test your T4 and T3 as well? Does it run in your family?
I think it's possible to be hypo with the labs coming back normal. My SIL is on a low dose (1/4 or 1/2 grain) of armour because she found a doc that would give her meds based on symptons. I'm not sure what type of doc she went to, but you might want to get an endocronologist if you haven't already. They are better at digging deeper into those types of things. Good luck!

I had my T4 and TSH tested. Is the TSH the T3 one? It does run in my family. I have endo, but think I need a new one. Thanks for your response.

No, TSH and T3 are different things. Your thyroid produces 2 hormones T3 and T4. It produces T3 in smaller amounts, but if that small amount is lacking it can make you feel hypo. TSH is actaully produced by another gland (I think it's the pituitary). When your thyroid isn't doing what it's supposed to your body will try to make up for it by producing more TSH. It couldn't hurt to get your T3 tested as well. It might be a good idea to find an endo that will at least give you a small dose of thyroid meds as a trial to see if it makes you feel any better. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping it's the T3 then. It's sad to be wanting a diagnosis, isn't it?

No, it's not sad at all, you're just looking for an answer and to feel better.

i have the same question.. i got my TSH T3 and T4 checked.. all are in the normal range not even borderline.. but i read somewhere that hypothyroidism causes leakage from nipples.. which i have.. another reason could be high levels of prolactin.. but that too came out normal.. even so my doc gave me prolactin inhibitors then which ive been taking but i still get discharge from my nipples.. i was thinking maybe then it was my thyroid thats causing all these problemas.. how can i know for sure if im hypothyroid or not.. do u think i could start taking medicine for it.. ??

I've never heard of that being a symptom of hypothyroid. I would talk to your doc about it. Do you have any other symptoms of hypothyroid? I would seek and endocronologist if you haven't already. It sounds like whatever this is it is hormone related and that's what endos specialize in.

I definitely think you can! All of my numbers are with in normal limits, some actually borderline, but my doc still won't treat me. Both my mother and sister have hypo. Right now i'm too burnt out to find a new endo.

I've never heard that as a symptom before. Ask your doctor about that.

its true.. hypothyroidism can cause discharge from the nipples..
heres a link http://adam.about.com/reports/Hypothyroidism.htm thats proves it..
i was also thinking.. that my T3 T4 and TSH levels were normal but i wasnt checked for antithyroid antibodies.. maybe that could cause hypothyroidsm in me ??

As well as Free T3, Free T4 & TSH, you should also ask to have your auto-antibodies checked. My mum, aunt & grandma all have hypothyroidism and all of their results came back normal when they were only tested for T3, T3 & TSH. It was only when my mum insisted on having her autoantibodies checked that it was recognised that her thyroid wasn't working properly (her auto-antibody count was about 10 times higher than the normal range!) and it turned out to be the same for my aunt and grandma. Mine were normal when I had tests 6 years ago, but I'm having issues with weight gain and tiredness and I'm currently waiting for the results of another test. I figure it's so common in my family, I won't be surprised if I turn out to have thyroid problems as well.

Have they checked for thyroid antibodies? All my thyroid hormone levels were within range, but because I had thyroid antibodies I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. May be worth asking!

i've heard that even women with normal thyroid blood labs can have slight issues....and that it needs to be taken on an individual basis.

i've heard that even normal numbers can be misleading for an individal and it needs to be a case by case basis
