Default Can you help me?

Hello all, my name is Kelly and I'm 31. I was dx with pcos when I was around 19, but dr's only treated the bleeding symptom by putting me on bcp. I have always had an extremely hard time losing weight. Before going on gluc xr, I was always starving, would majorly binge on carbs, my eyesight prescription has gotten worse every years since the 6th grade, and I was always extremely tired-I mean all of the time.

Since I had my son in 1998, I've had a really hard time with yeast infections and uti's (this has improved greatly after going on gluc). 2 years ago my ob/gyn even had the 3 hr glucose test to check for diabetes cause I was having yeast infections one after another, but he said it came out normal.

In august (after having a hysterectomy due to never ending periods-still have ovaries though) I asked my family dr to put me on gluc for the pcos symptoms that were sure to rear up since I was stopping bcp. She agreed. As I have indicated above, many of my symptoms have greatly improved. My question is how can I know if I have diabetes or IR (I was not tested for either this year before I started the gluc)? Can you be tested for them when on this medication? Considering my symptoms...what do you think...could I have diabetes? It is in my family by the way.

Thanks for your help.
Kelly

Kelly,
Your symptoms do sound suspicious especially the recurring YIs. I know high sugar can cause a YI.

My doctor still sends me for bloodtests and I am on insulin and glucophage XR. If you take your glucophage in the morning you might want to wait until after your bloodwork to take it with your breakfast, assuming the bloodwork is fasting. Also, since Glucophage does not cause low blood sugar in non diabetics then I don't think it would affect the test results, but then again I am not a nurse or a doctor or a lab technician so I really don't know.

If you are concerned, talk to your doctor about having a test done and ask him/her about the glucophage affecting the test. I certainly hope you are only IR.
Best Wishes,
Diana
