Question Can you overdose on Folic Acid?

Hi all, I take Metformin and just decided to add a B12 vitamin and calcium supplements to combat a B12 deficiency. Problem is - I already take a prenatal vitamin with 1 gram of Folic Acid - the B12 vitamin I bought also has 400 mcg. of Folic Acid. I also eat fortified cereal (product 19) which has lots of Folic Acid. Am I getting too much of it? Are there any side effects?
Thanks!

The risk of taking too much folic acid is that it may mask a B12 deficiency. However if you're also taking B12 supplements too then its unlikely you will be deficient in either.
Its water soluble so chances are that excess amounts will be just passed through your body and be excreted in your urine. However you do have to be more careful if you have a history of seizures.

Thanks for the reply! I'm always worried my supplements will do more harm than good.

Hi Kielygal,

My doc gave me prescription to take 4mg of folic acid a day. That's a pretty high dose. But it's what the doctor ordered. I have the MTHFR mutation, that is why I have to take the high dose. I think you are probably fine.
