Question Can you still have PCOS with regular periods?

Hello Ladies,

I am 30 y.o. and diagnosed with PCOS 2 days ago.. However the endocrinologist I saw ...seemed a little 'off' or 'nutty', 'eccentric'. I just don't believe/trust him (and plan on getting a 2nd opinion at some point)

I really have one important question that I would like answered.

Is it possible to still have PCOS with regular/consistent cycles???

Because I do have regular cycles
The only symptom I have is excess facial hair - which I've always attributed to my genetics (since I was a teen)- as I am of middle-eastern/mediterranean ethnicity

As far as fertility goes, I do not have children nor am I trying to have at the moment.

Thank you,
Caprice

There are five different types of PCOS, some you O and some you don't ...

http://www.wdxcyber.com/dxinf001.htm

# traditional PCOS -- anovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance
# endocrine syndrome X -- anovulatory, increased androgens, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
# non-traditional PCOS --anovulatory, normal androgens, obese, insulin resistant or type 2 diabetes
# non-traditional PCOS -- ovulatory, increased androgens, mild insulin resistance
# idiopathic hirsutism -- ovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance

Thank you for the prompt reply..

Here are my medical lab results:

Testosterone, Serum: 57 ng/dL (range: 14 - 76)
free Testosterone (Direct) 0.9 (range: 0 - 2.2)

LH: 8.0 (range: 0 - 76.3)
FSH: 3.9

DHEA Sulfate: 113 (range: 45 - 270)

This is all relatively new, I know everyone is different - but it seems that I am within range.

Did you have a fasting glucose test for insulin resistance?

I have never missed a period in my life. And I certainly dont have problems with fertility either. What started out as merely problems with excess hair for me , 20 years later turned into full blown symptoms. After I had mt son nearly 3 years ago things started getting worse, like more & more hair, oily spotty skin, I got really thick around the waist, finally hair started falling out on my head. I was finally diagnosed this year and it turns out I have insulin resistance and extremely high androgen levels. So keep an eye on other symptoms, they may just slowly creep up on you.Definately check to see if you're insulin resistant too. Good luck

I had never missed a period, either, however, I was not ovulating. My cycle was a 'regular' 35 days - which my doc said, was NOT regular. Once my hormones got in order, my cycle shortened to 28 days (almost to the hour.)

That said...I STILL have PCOS.

Default Glucose and Insulin tests

Interesting..

Insulin, Fasting: 4.3 (Low) Range: 6-27
Glucose, Serum: 74 Range: 65-99

Insulin, Fasting: 4.9
Glucose, Serum: 84
-------

Here's the question.. the test I did a month ago, I was NOT fasting. How can it be fasting insulin? (I asked the endo if I should fast, he said it wasn't necessary for the tests I needed) The only thing I had that morning was some coffee - so "almost" fasting if there's such a thing.
Nothing special was done, just blood drawn. I read in other posts people tested before and after given some glucose(?)
He was also testing me for thyroid issues... he said unrelated to PCOS that I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (!) essentially being hypothyroid...

However the test a year ago I was indeed fasting b/c it was part of the CBC.

The endo said to discuss and work with my GP - he was basically a consultant and whatever I do will be with my GP.
