I would say yes! I'm not diabetic but I have a "Impared Glucouse Tollerance" ie insulin resistance. My A1C is in the normal range so there I'm not diabetic but my glouclouse tollarnace test come back borderline #'s so thats how I was dx with IR. HTH
Think of it like a continuum; insulin resistance (the body's resistance to using the insulin produced) over time will cause the pancreatic beta cells to burn out and quit producing enough insulin. The combination of insulin resistance along with insufficient insulin (and thus increased blood sugars into diabetic range) is when real diabetes sets in. If you can reverse the insulin resistance (with lifestyle change and/or meds), you can lessen the load on the beta cells and save them from destruction (prevent diabetes).

Yes... I know several women that are IR and not diabetic... But alas I failed the GTT and my a1c's initially were high. My next one (april 19th) will again be high, as the same dose of glucophage I was on, isn't holding me now. The babies did that to me.

I am IR and am not diabetic. Insulin-resistance w/o diabetes is usually considered to be pre-diabetes. It definitely increases the chance that you will eventually become diabetic. Getting IR under control is very important because that way you can prevent or at least delay diabetes.

i'm IR (so my fasting insulin levels are too high), but NOT a diabetic (my blood sugar's normal each and every time).
Linda explained it best with the continuum (thanks linda!) and remember that pre-diabetes or IR, while not curable, is totally manageable by lifestyl, eating habits and exercise.
