From what I have read, metformin is usually safe during pregnancy and can sometimes decrease the risk of miscarriage in some cases. I would talk to your doctor about all of your medications and concerns before ttc.

I have been ttc now for over a year. My cnm put me on 1000 mg of Metformin (500 2x day) to start because of the PCOS. She said it's safe to use during pregnancy, and like TiaJadeddevil said, it's supposed to lessen the risk of miscarriage. I'm now on 850 mg at night and 500 mg in the morning (VERY slowly working up to 850 2x day).

Hope this helps!

The only reason my RE put me on Metformin was because I am ttc! I took it before to help regulate my cycles, but it never did, but he wanted me to be on it during the whole ttc process because even if it doesn't help regulate your cycles, it can help with the pearl-like cysts on your ovaries if you have them and also helps to prevent miscarriages in pcos cysters, or at least that's what my RE says!

You can take met while trying to get pregnant. In fact, I credit all of my pregnancies to met. I have been pregnant 4 times. The first 3 ended in miscarriage (I have a clotting disorder). This one stuck. Actually, it wasn't just met. It was met and weight loss. I am on 750 3x per day. I am also staying on met throughout my pregnancy.

Good luck!

Oh and as the PPs said, it does help prevent miscarriage, but my doctor said that it also helps or can help stave off gestational diabetes.

You can absolutely take met to get pregnant, but of course talk to your doc. I am the proud mother of twin girls as a result of Met. I was told basicly my whole life that I would never be able to have kids. I started taking it for insulin resistance, and got prego with twins. I took it all through my pregnancy and am still taking it. I avoided gestational diabetes and cycled the first month I took it.

My doctor put me on met so I could get pregnant becaue I have IR and was not ovulating. I am on a combo of met and clomid to try to conceive.

Like PP said, talk to your doc first. I am another person who was put on Met in order to conceive. My RE had me stay on it during my first trimester.

After I had my baby (this was summer 2007), my OB and RE said that there was new research supporting the use of Met for PCOS patients during the entire pregnancy (and post-partum) as a way to stave of gestational diabetes but also to help with breastmilk supply issues.
