Canadian Adoptions

Hi ladies

I was wondering whether someone could help me with this.

A week ago my sister was talking with her patient who is a foster mom in the Durham region where I live.

She stated that they do something called a "showing". It is a weekend where you come and be interviewed and all the kids that can be adopted come and you basically are matched or can pick your child?

I have e-mailed the adoption agency and am awating their response.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Unfortunately only Canadian or Ontario ladies might be of assistance.

Any help that anyone else may provide would be greatly appreciated too.

I have never heard of this ?

Is it through CAS ? Or a private adoption agency ?

I cant see anyone parading around a bunch of children to be adopted, seems a bit weird to me...

I hope someone else can answer, or you get a response from the agency...if you do let me know what the deal is !

the only thing i can think of is it could be an adoption fair. it is where a bunch of approved parents come and meet with a bunch of adoptable children. i have never been to one, but i know they have them here in alberta. take care, let us know what you find out. lisa

Hey ladies

Well the agency called me back.

How it works is like this.

Once you are approved and have taken the course and passed the homestudy you can apply.

But.....

They will only refer you if they cannot find you a child. The children they bring are hard to adopt children. Siblings, disabilities, older kids.

Agencies from all over Canada can come and attend to showcase the children they need adopted. They call it a Resource Meeting.

I did talk to her about our chances of adoption and how long the waiting list is.

DNA didn't you say you had/were applying to local adoption.

She told me the waiting list is 18 months just to get in to take their mandatory class. Then from there you have to be assigned a social worker who will make an appt (could be months) to come and do your homestudy. From there if your approved they put your name in and wait for children. Some people wait 5 years from start to end. She said some people have waited 2 years just to take the course. She was sort of discouraging but I guess she was just trying to be realistic so as not to get my hopes up.

Okay that makes more sense....I forget what its called but its held in Toronto and its Canadas Waiting Children...

They are hard to place children they want to make public in hopes of giving them a loving home.

Yes we have taken the course through CAS (took us 2 years to get in to take it) and are currently paper gathering for our homestudy to be done.

We dont have our hopes up high to adopt a child through CAS but we also didnt figure it would hurt to apply *just in case*

They were saying something like 2 babies were placed last year !! *yikes* thats just not very many....private is better to go through, I think people hear CAS and they assume the worst.
