This means that all of those automated telemarketing calls are now illegal. The only telemarketing type calls which are legal if you are on this list are from charities, newspapers and businesses with whom you've previously done business. This is different from the previous list as it is federal, rather than limited to companies who are registered with the organization whose list you could opt out of (I forget the name of it, but it had a good 80% of all legit telemarketing companies on it).
Unfortunately this is so popular that I can't get to the page to register my number or the FAQ.

My DH has registered us, he works nights so he did it first thing after midnight...
You can get removed by the other lists too by telling them that you want to be removed when they call...
Shows you how many people hate telemarketing everyone trying to sign up crashed the site for hours.... hahaha
Sucks too that this is only for 3 years, you have to sign up again... Crafty!!! Who's goning to remember in 3 years, maybe after you start getting phone calls again...

I signed up and it will be nice not to have those automated, pre-recorded calls that block their number on the caller ID.

Unfortunately the American system is like this as well, but they are removed for 5 years.
Also, my hubs read something that the government was expecting 100,000 people to sign up in the first week, and they had about 223,000 people had registered for the service by about 1:30 p.m.
lol, i think people were waiting for it! lol

I usually ask the caller to remove me from their list. Sometimes though I feel sorry for the voice on the other line, they are only doing their job. But still, what a disturbance those calls can be. They are getting later in the evening then usual, too. And many use "private" calling numbers now, so I feel tricked into answering, because I assume it could be a doctor's office.

The part that sucks is that the scam calls don't come from Canada. Most of them come from Florida ("Congratulations, you've won a vacation..." HONK! "This is your cruismaster...." "Our records indicate that you're an idiot and paid hundreds of dollars for a vacation you never actually took. What I mean is, we hope you're an idiot and give us all of your personal information to retrieve a vacation you can't remember paying for, because you never did."). Those telemarketers are exempt because Canadian telemarketing laws don't apply to them. And because they are scam artists who don't care anyway.

I didn't know that those laws didn't apply in the States. That sucks! I was looking forward to the peace and quiet. The thing that bothers me most is that everyday I come home and the voice mail is flashing. I check the messages it's all garbage and then my cordless dies 5 minutes later from flashing all day long "voice mail"
We registered and were told it would take 30 days. I think we should be "active" in the next 5 days or so. I swear ever since we put our number on the list we're getting 5 times as many calls. Sometimes 7 or 8 a night.

When my DH and I moved in together we added my old phone number as teh smart ring option. So we get 2 times the calls. It's very painful!
