Have you tried looking for a used one? I'd suggest checking out Craig's List for one that might be more affordable. Good Luck!

Default I agree

Look for a better-quality used one. I bought a top of the line elliptical a few years ago through the ads, and I still use it all of the time. A cheap one might not last as long.

If you wait until after Christmas a lot of exercise equipment goes on sale (because of all the New Year's resolutions). I bought a treadmill in January at Sears a couple of years ago for less than half price when they were having a sale...they were having a half price sale and it was the prior year model (still new and unused) and it was reduced even more. Saving $$ by buying on sale would allow you to "buy up" to a better model if you wanted to.

Good luck!

Maybe you have tried this and this sounds dumb, but have you checked out any workout tapes. I honestly lost weight doing some tapes, and I am sure they have ones to meet you at whatever fitness level you are starting at. Plus, a tape costs a lot less money so it's not a big investment and you can do them in any type of weather. I do taebo because it really helps me tone and I like the kickboxing ones as well. You could also get the stretch bands to build lean muscles. If you really want a machine, maybe you could find one at a closeout/discount place, or look at bizrate to compare models. Finally, I joined a gym at my hospital where there are all types of people so I feel totally comfortable no matter what my weight is at the time and I get access to durable equipment, specifically top notch treadmills, and can go no matter what the weather has in store, well except for hurricanes down here in FL, but you get the idea. Januaury is a great time to join a gym and they have great discount programs and you can look around for one that makes you feel good. I heard Curves is good as well. I hope this helps you to think about some options and good luck!!

Check this out as well:

Thumbs up I totally agree!!

Personally I love workout tapes... especially taebo!!! I found that when I did taebo I lost more weight than working out at the gym.
Good Luck!

Hi....

I am a little embarrassed to say this; but I bought a gazelle (the tony little machine) and i had to buy the more expensive one because of the weight limits on smaller machines....i hadnt been to doc in years literally and i couldnt weigh myself on regular bathroom scales because they stop at 300 so i just took a shot and got it even though the weight limit was 350 i figured i was fine....this was this past spring...anyways, i started losing weight, and when i finally broke down and went to see a doctor in the middle of August, i was 358!!! i was horribly shocked and mortified because i knew i had lost weight and i was still so much more than i thought i was....

anyhow, last doc visit (a week ago today) i weighed in at 323 !!!!
So the gazelle works (even though the tapes can be really annoying)

my point is-- even though they put weight limits on that stuff, it doenst always have to be followed to a T. I would be willing to bet I was atleast 380 when i started.

i think they just have to do that for legal reasons, but the machines can actually support a little more than they say....

GOOD LUCK!

hi everyone...thanks to everyone for their responses.. unfortunately doing tapes done work for me cause i just stop moving lol i need some sort of machine to get into a groove

kelly.... sooo which machine of tony littles did you end up buying..are their differnt price gazelles or types??

i have seen those machines and often wondered... do you really get a work out or are you just swinging back and forth bc of gravity and not actual effort???

i need something almost NO impact bc of my feet and knees and my very high weight.

lol i am also afraid that i would break the machine or tip it over...

i would love to know more bout the gazelle from your personal experience and which actual one you have been using!! thanks so much xo jenn

When bought a machine, the one that Chuck Norris endorses, a few years ago. At that time my hubby wanted it and said he would use use, he was under 250 then. It had a weight limit of 250 so I wasn't able to use it. Had we paid more and bought the next one up, I would have been able to use it. I do understand that the reason they put the weight limits on them is because they use cheap materials to build them.

We are looking at getting a treadmill this year for Christmas. I was looking at one and couldn't find anywhere on the box where it said a weight limit. I do not want to buy the thing, take it home and find out I am too fat for it. Then I would have to haul the thing back and explain why it won't work. I am hoping that Dh will help me find out if we can both use it, although he know weighs the same as me.

As far as tapes and dvds go, well, I tried them and I just can't get motivated. If I could watch my soaps or evening shows and exercise, I would be more likely to do so.

prunepie, it sucks, but if you take your time and look around there are some inexpensive machines that have higher weight limits, and like others have said, look for sales!!!!! The Gazelle has different models with different weight limits and I thought that it actually looked like a fun machine. But I am going to start with a treadmill since I know that walking is going to be best for me. I am hoping that by this time next year I will be doing more, maybe outdoor exercising like crosscountry skiing. Hope you find something that will work for you. If you are really interested in the Gazelle, do a search. You will find lots of info on them. I use to have them in my favorites.

The Gazelle I bought is called the FREESTYLE ELITE. its the top-of the line. It is better than the cheaper ones not only because it holds more weight, but because there are "pistons" on it that you can set the resistance on--and trust me, they make a HUGE difference! its totally not like you are just swinging--its real work. and leaning forwards or backwards while you do it works different muscles; or standing sideways..... trust me- it is awesome! they are kinda expensive, but i bought mine on ebay (new) for about 220....MUCH less then they are in the stores or on tv...

and its fun!

IM sorry I didnt totally answer your questions--

Dont worry about impact with the gazelle, its very very low. Just wear good gym shoes with ankle support if you have bad ankles...
I have HORRIBLE knees (I hear them crunch when I walk up stairs or sometimes just from getting up and down...they pop constantly too) and it doenst hurt at all to use the gazelle... I actually felt that my knees felt better after using it a few days (maybe from "stretching" of working out or maybe it was just in my head?)

Honey do not worry about tipping the machine...I felt that way before I tried it too, but like I said before I think I was about 380 or so and I never even came close to tipping it. I never felt it pull or anything....

The Gazelle is a great idea for anyone who wants low/no impact. It won't tip over because of the way it's designed (unless you actually throw yourself against the side of it) and you're not moving because of gravity (or inertia SP?) but once you get moving, it has tension/resisting settings so you actually HAVE to put work into it to make it move.

I can't wait to get mine, I'm saving up for now.

Treadmills are GREAT too... and don't worry about the weight limits.. They can actually support 150+lbs more than the stated limit most of the time (depends on the manufacturer and quality of materials) but usually, treadmills aren't going to crash if you're topping 400lbs and it's limit is 250-300. While I was at the gym the other day, I noticed the treadmill had a weight limit of like.. 250lbs. I am about 35-40lbs more than the limit and had no issues. These were awesome machines too, so I imagine the ones in other gyms I've been to that had older, lower quality treadmills had a lower weight limit and I didn't have issues on those either.

The machines to watch the weight limit on (in my opinion) are things like those real-life stair masters, where it actually looks like stairs... that move (scary machine IMO) or the smaller elliptical machines. I bought one of those (weight limit 225) when i was 280lbs and it worked fine, but when I got up around 300+ it started to make a weird creaking noise. And then it wouldn't turn right after i hit 310. But, I went to the gym and started using their machines and had no problems whatsoever. now that I'm back down under 300 I can use the one at home again.
(If I didn't hate it so much).
