i've just diagnosed pcos a several days ago, found this site and decided to be on a low carb diet. i was on a good diet for 2 days and lost 2 pounds. but today was a disaster. i binged on everything i could possibly find in my house... and mostly bad carbs. i hate that i did it but when i started to eat... i just couldn't stop.
just wonder if anyone has had this problem and how do you deal with it? does this have anything to do with the willpower? please, any suggestions... experience... tips.....
2 pounds in 2 days sounds really good! I tried to do South Beach but I couldn't stick to it...I wouldn't go too extreme. Allow yourself some carbs but make sure you're not eating anything refined. Maybe you can have whole grain pasta for one meal or something like that. I can live with one pasta/bread serving a day but there's no way I will ever be able to completely take chocolate out of my diet.
I'm going through the same thing. I really thought I could cut back the carbs and sweets when I went on Met, but I think it's just gotten worse! I don't really have any suggestions other than what the PP said. Try whole wheat pastas and breads...at least they're "healthy carbs."
Good luck!
And btw, 2 lbs in 2 days is FANTASTIC!

It's mainly just a willpower thing. I did South Beach, and phase 1 was a *******. *I* was a *****. It was just a bad time all 'round. I have an oral fixation thing on top of it all (I'm not really hungry, I just need to chew on something)- I would reach for something crunchy that I could have. Carrots, celery, whatever. Or I'd distract myself by doing something else and trying not to think about food. Or make something extra yummy for my next meal to take my mind off bready things. Keep your eye on the prize. After a few days the cravings pass, and you find yourself not really wanting carbs. Sometimes I find myself reaching for something out of habit more than anything. It's kind of an awesome feeling to break that cycle.
thanks everyone!
speaking of South Beach Diet, i did it once on March. i did phase 1 just fine, i was able to control my cravings. then when i entered phase 2, i just started to eat very poorly and unhealthy food and gained a couple pounds back. after that, i had tried to be on diet and started to binge after since. i don't blame the diet thou, i agree with Mim... it's all about willpower. i really do need to work on that. but again... like mahjab said... chocolate has somehow become so hard to cut out of diet... lol.
It is a LONG, SLOW process (was for me, anyway), but I have found that the less junk I eat, the less I crave it. Getting to the point now where I rarely eat junk food has taken 5 or 6 years, and it was hard, but I can honestly say that I love eating super-healthy food, and I don't even like chips or chocolate anymore! (I know, how weird am I?!)
Please pm if you would like any help, ideas, etc.!

I did South Beach and lost 20 pounds. Phase one was pretty difficult but I found that once I got through the first 2 weeks the cravings for carbs diminished. It definitely takes will power and a few stumbles but the outcome is worth it. Unfortunately the more processed carbs we eat the more we crave.
I found that switching to no sugar added when eating ice cream helped and also if I get a real hankering for sweets I eat the Russell Stover sugar fee candies (though you really should only eat a few peices a day) Basically I've started eating like a diabetic.....
Its tough this diet and lifetyle stuff......stick with it and it does wonders for your PCOS symptoms!
dancerz - I'm on the Insulite system, and part of the system deals with nutrition. This is how they target nutrition.
"The step-by-step Insulite PCOS System Nutrition Plan does not count calories. Instead, it gradually directs your body to a healthy diet. In essence, it provides the solution to one of the primary causes of Insulin Resistance and excess weight and obesity - too many carbohydrates. The Nutrition Plan also addresses the addictive quality of certain foods and advocates a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, with lots of green vegetables and fruits. We don't have an "induction phase" where you're deprived of all carbs and are just eating protein and fat. We ask that you lower your carbohydrate intake from where you are now and slowly persevere in reducing it each week, so it doesn't feel like such a shock to your system."
In my opinion, the whole carb craving and binging is not just willpower, but also an addiction. You crave what you eat. If you always eat chips, then the moment you try to eliminate that completely from your diet, you'll crave it. If you slowly start reducing your carbs rather than going cold turkey, you may be more successful.
I can attest to food being an addiction. I've tried everything under the sun as far as trying to lose weight for the past 10 years. And over the course of the past 10 years, if I've completely omitted a bad carb from my diet, I not only crave about it, but I OBSSESS about it. It will gnaw about my brain until I finally give in to eating it. All of a sudden 2 chips winds up being an entire bag.

I agree with u about the eating like a diabetic. The low glycemic diet is a diabetic type diet. and its basically about eating all the right carbs instead of the wrong ones. I havnt fully started it bacause i live with 10 people and they all eat what they want so it makes it really hard to deal. but in about 3-4 weeks i will have my own place and i will be starting it!!! I started metformin a week ago 500mg. the 2nd week will 1000mf and the 3rd week will be 1500mg until further notice. next month if im doing well at my check up i get clomid too. Met with a diet is what im hopeing wroks for me!!! take care ladies and lots of luck <3

Splashsmama, you've got it exactly right. Many of us have an addiction to sugar, which our body physically craves. And once you get started, a cycle of crave, eat, crash, crave, etc. begins. Fighting those cravings is extremely difficult.
As a matter of fact, I didn't know just how much I craved sugar and sugary type treats until my naturopath took me off of sugar. She recommended taking Chromium Picolinate to help get through the cravings and it helped.
THe only thing that "cures" the cravings though is to not eat the low carb stuff.

its very hard to stay away from all the foods you want to eat but you know are bad for you
my dr sugested eating whole wheat pizza and bread, pasta e.t.c at 1st it tasted horrible but after 1 week of eating no white flour foods my taste buds adjusted to the taste of the whole wheat
also try pairing carbs with protein to slow down the rate its absorbed by the body so your blood sugar isnt all crazy high some examples would be snack food 1 slice of bread with 2 tbls of penut butter and other carbs with cheese nuts yogurt e.t.c
i hope this helps

My Dr put me on lo-carb when I started met. I also found it very difficult to stay lo-carb. What I have done is I'll have 1 regular meal and the rest of my day is lo-carb. This seems to ease my cravings and make it easier to do.
I wanted to put my 2 cents in. I've been on low carb diets of years off and on. The weight comes off pretty fast, but comes back ON even faster. I'm soooo sick of the yo yo. Right now I'm at the point of not being able to stick to anything on my own. I've had a real issue of it and it makes me mad. So I'm now on nutrisystem and it's been working. I'm still a SLOW loser, but that fact that it's coming off is making me happy. Also, it has teached me to eat every few hours (that's always been hard for me). Eventually, after my weight loss I will ween myself off of the program and do it on my own.....by then it'll be a lifestyle!!
Just wanted to let you know what I've been doing that's working! I also just ordered Insulite & I REALY hope that works!!!

I would try using some whole grain carbs. One slice of some really rough whole grain bread will stick with you all day - trust me. I've never really been a slave to cravings, but I'm on Metformin and it has effectively turned me off of food. Aside from fear of side effects, I just don't have any cravings whatsoever.
Sometimes when I want to eat something but I'm not really hungry, I allow myself a small taste that I eat really slowly. Once I'm through the small piece, I know if I'm not hungry after that piece - it was just a craving. I try to treat my cravings like an urge for a taste - not an urge to fill my belly. Sort of .... if you crave chicken wings.... lick a few wings - then see if you really want to eat the whole plate **Grin**
Also - for counting weight loss - only count the weigh ins once a week. Pick the same time, every week to test. I can go 3 - 4 pounds in either direction depending on how hydrated I am and how many times I've gone to the bathroom. So I only count Sunday morning weigh ins....
