Stephanie ~ I agree with you, God definately uses these things to teach. I always wondered if maybe I have PCOS just so I can help someone else with PCOS. The mom of a girl a few years behind me in school works at our grocery store, and as I was in her line she mentioned being so happy for me that I was finally able to have another baby after so long. She then mentioned that her DD had been trying for awhile for another baby, gained lots of weight, etc. I told her to check into this - by her symptoms she sounds just like me (her name is Tammy too oddly enough) Just back in July I met a girl that was visiting DH's grandmother and we started talking about "girl" stuff - she asked me a lot of questions about what I had and then she went to the Dr. and was dx with it! She is now getting treatment. You just never really know what God has in store...

LL ~ If I am ever in TX I am going to look you up and get that !!!

Jenny ~ Prayers from this direction!

Ellie ~ Welcome!

Update from the fair... DD took 6th place market in her weight class! That is out of 10 kids. She is in a tougher class this year because of her pig weight - 250 is right in the nice mid-range, but the competition is a bit tighter. DD is having a blast out there - she is like her parents, hates to practice, but loves just doing it! She can hardly wait to get in the ring tomorrow.

Hi, Tammy!

I know what you mean. I have at least one friend that I know of that has PCOS, and it is because of this disorder that we have been brought closer together. She & her DH have been married for about 9 years, have had one miscarriage, and have been TTC ever since. They would make awesome parents. I pray for them often. God must know what he's doing! But I sure do have "baby fever"--now that I just spent the afternoon with my friend who has a 13 month old!

Congrats on the fair!

God Bless,
Carrie

Welcome Ellie ~ glad you found us here!

Thanks for all your prayers my wonderful Catholic cysters ~ I'll keep you updated on DH's job situation. We are in the 2ww period right now(informally unofficially TTC turned into TTC ). I feel like we are getting our hopes up but we're crossing our fingers & temps are up!

I just got back from Family Day at our Seminary. My little bro is there going through the Vianney Program to help figure out his vocation. He's not really a seminarian ~ he doesn't take classes but he lives there for the experience. It was really great! We had Mass, lunch, & then got a tour of the place. I loved their library & they have wonderful open grounds which are very peaceful. All the seminarians were so friendly... they will make excellent priests! I'm going to send my bro a 'care package' with some baked goodies & religious things for his room. I hope he clearly hears God's call, whatever it is, soon!

Has anyone noticed SC has been kind of quiet lately? Not many new posts. Must be that busy time of the year again!

Hi I just thought I would stop in. I took rcia a year ago but since finishing we haven't went to church recently. I am really trying to get my dh back into going. Iguess I just need to go with out him.

I haven't read through all of the post but just wanted to see what your opinions are on this. I had IVF done. how do I teach my dd that her conception was wrong?

Tiffany welcome!

Your IVF question. I will have to think about that one. Actually, there was a thread about it a while back on the ttc thread, I will try to find it for you.

ttc (religious question)

On Page 3 post#36 are my thoughts. I am sure there are others, so take your time and read through the thread. HTH!

Here, I went ahead and just copied my response here for everyone to see:

The Catholic belief or "rule" is that any way a baby is made outside of the marriage bed (meaning the actual marriage act, it doesnt mean your re can come give you AI as long as its in your bed, ha) is NOT allowed. Fertility drugs are exceptable because the physical act of concieving is not compromised. Children are viewed as a blessing, and not something that is deserved.

So, those are the rules, but that doesnt mean that I didnt struggle with them when ttc dd. Even before I was Catholic (dh is a craddle Catholic, but didnt think to look into this) I did di IUI once, it didnt work, but if it did I would have a hard time with the accusation that the baby was not a blessing. I ended up concieving with clomid and ovidrel alone.

I have nothing to back my next thoughts up, they really are just my thoughts. To me everything is a test. We are tempted and faced with challenges that give us a chance to prove our character. Just because a Catholic has a baby as a result of IVF doesnt mean that the child is not accepted, only that the parent has to answer for their actions. And for me, if I didnt believe this, and live by it, then I wouldnt be a true practicing Catholic.

I knoe the desperation of wanting to concieve and there are so many temptations out there for a Catholic to step out of bounds. And I as a regular person here on earth completely sympathise. I couldnt promise that if I wasnt lucky enough to concieve the way I did that I would not be questioning if these rules are really neccessary. Infertility is a wicked thing. THat said, many good things can come from it.

Hi Tiffany! Nice to meet you Glad you stopped in ~ we've got a great bunch of women here.

Did you just become Catholic or were you at RCIA more as an inquiry type of thing? We all struggle in our faith but we definitely struggle more as we get further from the sacraments ~ it would be great if you could start getting to Mass again! It is such a gift.

As for IVF, I would wait & explain it to her when she is old enough to understand that she is not bad because of how she was conceived. She did not choose to be conceived that way so she needs to know that it isn't something she needs to feel bad about. Just let her know that she is loved by you & God despite whatever choices you have made. I'm sure she'll have questions too ~ just answer them honestly & let her know that she is loved. HTH.

Hope you come by often ~ we'd love to get to know you more.

Welcome aboard, Tiffany! It's nice to have you!

I agree with Jenny. Wait till your daughter is old enough (perhaps in her teens). And it is so important for you to get back to the Sacraments! You're setting an example for your daughter, and if she doesn't see you or your husband going to Mass & Confession, she's not going to want to go. Not going to Sunday Mass is a mortal sin, unless you have a serious reason (such as an illness) for not going. I only say this because you are my sister in Christ, and it bothers me when I see a sister away from her faith. It's just too important. Even if you have to go without your husband, please go...and pray for him while you're there, that he will one day go with you.

So I strongly encourage you to get to Confession & Mass as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the longer you're going to be kept away by the devil (he does everything he can to keep people away from the Sacraments.)

God Bless,
Carrie

Hi Tiffany! Welcome!!
The most important thing to remember that no matter how they came into the world, each child is a blessing from God! Be very honest with your daughter about how important the Faith is to you, not in bits and pieces but in its entirety. Tell her how amazing the Lord is that even though we turn to selfish means, He still blesses us in the hope that we will return to Him. Definitely get yourself to the Sacraments! We all need as much grace as can be but you can already see future difficulties so stock up now! This is a precarious position, one I do not envy at all! I would talk to a good priest about the situation to see if he can't counsel you even better then we can. That's their job.
HTH! I'm glad you found us!

Hi and welcome to all the newcomers...I've been MIA for a few days, I'm sorry that I missed you.

As for the conception thing...I totally agree with what Kara said. Your child is a gift no matter what and it's important that she know that.

I have a question...anyone else feeling sad and blah about today's date? I can't get it out of my head being that I'm so close here in New Jersey. My heart just goes out to all the survivors and families who lost someone.

Deena Burnett was just on EWTN (The World Over show) talking about her husband who was on Flight 93. What an amazing woman she is. God bless her!

HI everyone, I hope everyone had a nice weekend

Tiffany-As a woman who has done IVF and has another cycle planned for next month, I totally do not know what to say. So I will talk about my self and the struggles to make the decision to do infertility treatments. (IUI's and IVF.) DH and I are devote catholics, we are both involved in many ministries in the church and we go to mass and confession atleast 3 times a month. (Confession more as needed.) I know in my heart my mind, and my soul I have no guilt or feel I have sinned for doing IUI's or IVF. That is my personal feelings. We had a talk with the priest actually this time last year when I started going to the RE. He did say I was tempting faith and showed me literature on reproductive technology. The priest did say that the ultimate decision was between DH and I. I know in my heart, my mind and my soul that we are making the right decision. The priest also said my baby or babies will be baptized in the church because all children regardless of how they were conceived are miracles and gifts from God. Who is to say that if I have a daughter someday and she (I hope this does not happen to any woman.) has PCOS and she needs to pursue fertility treatments? To me this is a normal part of my life. I feel that I was lead to this path by God. I pray about it all the time. I hope this helps.

Hi ladies!

Welcome tiffany! I find the best way to get dh to church is to go without him, evenutally sitting home on sunday mornings alone while your wife is at mass without him gets to them. Before you know it they will be dressed and ready before you are!

Why would you have to tell your dd her conception was wrong? Don't you believe that GOD blessed you with her regardless of whatever method you used to conceive her? Whatever decision you made to try to conceive was a decision between you, your dh and GOD and no one else. May GOD bless you with more babies.

Stephanie

Dear Catholic Cysters,

The following is taken straight from the EWTN website.

God Bless,
Carrie

Here is an excerpt from the Vatican Document, Donum Vitae:

6. HOW IS HOMOLOGOUS ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION TO BE EVALUATED FROM THE MORAL POINT OF VIEW?

Homologous artificial insemination within marriage cannot be admitted except for those cases in which the technical means is not a substitute for the conjugal act but serves to facilitate and to help so that the act attains its natural purpose.

The teaching of the Magisterium on this point has already been stated.(51) This teaching is not just an expression of particular historical circumstances but is based on the Church's doctrine concerning the connection between the conjugal union and procreation and on a consideration of the personal nature of the conjugal act and of human procreation. "In its natural structure, the conjugal act is a personal action, a simultaneous and immediate cooperation on the part of the husband and wife, which by the very nature of the agents and the proper nature of the act is the expression of the mutual gift which, according to the words of Scripture, brings about union 'in one flesh' ".(52) Thus moral conscience "does not necessarily proscribe the use of certain artificial means destined solely either to the facilitating of the natural act or to ensuring that the natural act normally performed achieves its proper end".(53) If the technical means facilitates the conjugal act or helps it to reach its natural objectives, it can be morally acceptable. If, on the other hand, the procedure were to replace the conjugal act, it is morally illicit. Artificial insemination as a substitute for the conjugal act is prohibited by reason of the voluntarily achieved dissociation of the two meanings of the conjugal act. Masturbation, through which the sperm is normally obtained, is another sign of this dissociation: even when it is done for the purpose of procreation, the act remains deprived of its unitive meaning: "It lacks the sexual relationship called for by the moral order, namely the relationship which realizes 'the full sense of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love' ".(54)

The entire document is on line at www.ewtn.com/library/CURIA/CDFHUMAN.HTM

Also, there is a very simple explanation of IVF and why it is wrong at the following web site location: http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10166

Carrie ~ I really like the American Life League article you linked to. It really addresses all the specific things we have discussed.

Tiffany ~ This is from that article. It answers your original question...

Quote:
What about the children that come from in vitro fertilization? Do they have less dignity?

God allows children to be conceived through in vitro fertilization because He respects human freedom. But this does not mean that in vitro fertilization children have any less God-given dignity. Every child is made in the image of God and deserves to be protected and loved.

However, this does not mean we can condone in vitro fertilization. Analogously, children are born outside of marriage. That doesn't mean we should promote the practice.
