I had my appt. yesterday and I was supposed to see Dr. Keefe at 2:45. She didn’t arrive back from her morning surgery until 4:15! Of course all the doctors I have seen for everything forgot to send over all my records so I had to go off the top of my head when telling her everything. I don’t really feel like she was listing to me though. For one she got a page in the first 2 minutes she was with me, and left the room to check what it was about. When she came back I was telling her about how I have been bleeding since last August. I told her about how the last doctor recommended a d and c and I want to know what is going on hormonally first. She asked all the general questions and then was ready to head out the door! I couldn’t believe it I had so much more to talk about with her...the fact that I think all this relates to my thyroid and that I have almost every symptom of PCOS. I stopped her and told her but she didn’t seem too interested. She just told me to go down and have my blood checked to see if I was anemic and I said yeah I know everyone does that! Then I am suppose to come back and learn how to chart for 2 months, since I have no idea when my cycle ends of begins. I'm just so tired of bleeding and getting no help! I don’t know what I expected but I guess I expected more than that! Please tell me that after charting they will take me seriously! I feel so ignored!

I'm so sorry to hear your experience with Dr. Keefe. Unfortunately, that is the way she is I think.....I went to her for 2 appts and stopped for VERY similar reasons. She seemed to forget things between appointments and when I tried to explain how I eat very low calories and don't lose weight, she implied that I should reduce my calories even more! It was all just really frustrating, and I ended up going to a different doctor after that. The new doctor didn't do anything for me either (except try and put me on bc, but I asked him how that would help me in the long run....and he thought better of it ). Finally, I got in to see Dr. Hilgers, and he was the first out of 7 doctors to figure out I had insulin resistance and to get me on Metformin. There are things though I think he has misinformation on because he claims that met can cause hypoglycemia....pharmacologically it cannot. I'm a pharmacy student and in ALL my classes about these type of drugs met is a "special" drug because of this. He also put me on this thyroid med I really really don't think I should be on. When I at first explained to him that I didn't want to take it, he got really really offended and went off on my fiance and I about how we weren't letting him be the doctor. Excuse me, I have a right to research my own health, and NO WHERE is "Wilson's Syndrome" considered a thyroid disorder....it doesn't exist.

So I have very mixed feelings as well about PPVI Institute. They did ultimately do more for me than anywhere, but in the end it seems like they are somewhat arrogant and don't want to listen.

Now that I know a few things about my condition, I've gone to a different endocrinologist and she has really helped me with a few things. We just increased my met dose to 2,000mg a day (YAY!) and she's looking into my thyroid levels to see if it is okay to stop the unnecessary T3 med. The only thing that has gone wrong is I realized she prescribed me the original Met and not ER. I didn't realize this till today when I've been having to run to the bathroom to be sick 2x already.....I wonder if this is partially because I needed to split the dose (again I didn't realize this was the ER version till this morning). So I'm going to try that today.....I really hope I don't keep feeling sick this week because I'm on vacation in the Caribbean! I get motion sick/sea sick as it is

Anyways, that was my experience.....currently feeling slightly frustrated with PPVI institute as well....I know many who have had a good experience though....so I don't know....

Sorry ya'll have had so many problems...

I was lucky, and finally hit the one dr (apparently) in the army that could look at my whacked out hormone levels and "read" PCOS. Sheesh. It only took what, 11 1/2 yrs? GRRRrrrrRRRRrrrrRRRR.

Anyway, GL to you ladies.

I have had a wonderful experience with a doctor who was trained at the PPVI Institute. He is a miracle worker, in my opinion! So don't give up! Just try a different doctor there!

I've seen a napro obgyn twice. He's not in Omaha, though he did train there. He did diagnose my PCOS when my regular obgyn didn't, and I thank him for that. I drove over 2 hours to seek treatment from him. I really really liked him after my first appointment. However, after my second follow-up appointment, I don't think I'll be going back to him. He didn't seem to remember why I was seeing him (to regulate my cycles and get my body back to "normal" - NOT to get pregnant). He didn't have the results of bloodwork he had ordered or the u/s I had done to look for cysts in my charts. During the appointment, his cell phone rang, and he answered it and chatted in front of me for a couple of minutes about a bbq. It was obviously a non-work related call.

He couldn't figure out my thyroid issues. My TSH numbers indicate hypothyroid, but my Free T4 and T3 tests came back normal. So, he told me that I didn't have a thyroid problem, even though I have extremely low basal temps(95.9*-96.2*) and am exhausted and lethargic frequently and am cold all the time, except for when I'm having a hot flash. I kept pressing him on it, and he told me he would look into it and get back with me. That was two weeks ago, and I have yet to hear from him.

On top of all of that, one of my SILs is also seeing him for PCOS. He didn't tell her that if she gets pregnant, she needs to have her progesterone levels checked asap. I was the one who advised her to have her levels checks. She would have lost her baby had I not told her to do so. Thankfully, she did have her levels checked and is still supplementing with progesterone injections.

I have heard great things about napro docs, but this one did not live up to my expectations. I'm going to see an endocrinologist locally next week.

I thought I would say "hi" and introduce myself since I've posted here several times.

I was just diagnosed with PCOS in March after suspecting it for close to a year. I always kept dismissing my cycle "wonkyness" because I was still nursing my son. However, after he weaned in October, my cycles never returned!

We had no trouble conceiving him in May of 2005. I don't know if I've always had PCOS or if it's something that developed only after he was born.

DH and I are both cradle Catholics. While we're not looking to add to our family now, it is something we would like to do sometime in the near future. So, I need to get my health problems under control now, not only for possible future blessings, but just to get healthier!

I also have been diagnosed with Insulin Resistance. I'm taking 1500 mg Metformin ER daily. I think my body's finally getting used to it. Thankfully!

There is also "something" wrong with my thyroid. My TSH levels are above normal, but my Free T4 and T3 are normal. However, I do have symptoms of hypothyroidism. I'm seeing an endocrinologist next week. He is very Catholic and has eight children, one of whom has PCOS herself. I'm hoping he'll be able to help me.

Hmm, I think that's about all. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here!

I'm so sorry some of you have had bad experiences with Dr's from PPVI... I think its more the Dr's them self then the institute. I have been to 3 different Napro trained Drs and all are so different!! I hope God leads you to the perfect Dr for your situation.. God Bless!

Well, it's been interesting to read all these experiences with the PPVI center. I'm still working with them long-distance, and I'm expecting to go out there soon. I hope everything goes well, because I'm in Vermont, and Omaha is a LONG way to go! (Plus, they want to run all these scary-sounding tests; laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, D&C, yada, yada, yada)

Man, I'm so nervous......and I'm terrified to think about what all that will cost!

Tif, I had those tests you mentioned, and they aren't that bad, really. I'd suggest following any "do not eat for X hours after the test" instructions. I didn't listen, and believe me, I suffered for it.

OK I have a question. Not sure if this has been asked here yet or not as I really do not have the time or the patience to go through a hundred and thirty pages of posts (sorry) But, I have been having kind of a hard time lately. Today is cycle number two on Clomid and this last cycle really got me to thinking, and I doing something wrong to take this whole TTC thing in my hands so much but actually taking Clomid? Does that take away the whole trusting in God thing or not? I am curious to see what everyone feels about this.

Hi, Ladies!

Sorry, I know I've been MIA for a while! I've been busy getting ready to play "Dorothy" in our parish's production of the Wizard of Oz! That was last Saturday, and it went very well!!

Becki, taking Clomid is not a bad thing at all! Just like taking any other church-approved medication or treatment, sometimes God uses those means in order to bless women with children! So by all means, don't feel bad that you're taking Clomid. I took it for a while, until my doctor said I needed to take a break. Now I'm ovulating on my own (praised be Jesus Christ!), as sometimes God chooses another method to help our bodies to work. Just keep trusting Him, and it will happen in HIS perfect time!

Becki, one small suggestion for when taking the clomid--

Start taking a couple of tspfuls of guafenisen (sp?) syrup--its like plain robitussin--during the day (one in the morning, one at night), to boost your production of cervical fluids. Clomid dries it up. And if you've got scant amounts anyway, well, it may help...

Hi Cysters,

I don't think I've ever posted, but I know I've visited and read posts on and off in the past couple of years. I need to share my sorrows a bit, so hope you'll bear with me and keep me in your prayers.

A little about me: I'm married, turn 31 this Saturday, and have a beautiful 19-month old DD with minor Spina Bifida (conceived with Metformin) who has a miracle story of her own (she's doing great after surgery and is doing nearly everything a normal child should). I've had heavy, non-stop bleeds on and off for the past 10 years. I was DX'ed with PCOS back in '04 or '05 by an awful Ob/Gyn who didn't listen to anything I said. Last year I started seeing a new Gyn., who hasn't been of much help (I feel like he's not really working hard to figure out the problem). Over the past 10 years, I've had ultrasounds, an endometrial biopsy, blood tests, etc, and have been on Metformin 2x/day regularly. All I've heard about are cysts, and I refused to take bcps unless the Metformin doesn't work (sometimes it doesn't help the bleeding). My first gyn. had me on it 3x/day, at which point I ovulated and conceived. The current gyn. doesn't want to up my dose, and has referred me to an endocrinologist, who I can't see until July 1st due to her busy schedule.

Whenever I have these long or heavy bleeds, I get extremely tired and feel awful. My hubby is not very supportive when I have these episodes and told me the other day that he's sick of my physical problems. Even though he's a cradle Catholic, he only practices because he "has" to. We have had our share of our own marital problems but have been working through them the past several months. Needless to say, life has been tough, and I am tired!!!

Just needed a shoulder to lean on, and hope you all will remember me in your prayers. Would love to hear how you all cope with everything.
