Question Causes - Everyone Reply Please

Hi Ladies,

My brother was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. I was thinking that it is weird that both of us have these major issues. I started thinking about my dad being a Vietnam Vet.

My question....

Who here is the child of a Vietnam/Korea vet? If so, were they exposed to Agent Orange?

Interesting you bring up Agent Orange!

I grew up in Oromocto, NB, Canada. My grandfather was military and was exposed to Agent Orange when they experimented with it on base. PCOS runs rampant in my family!

my dad was exposed, I've always wondered if it had anything to do with my issues.

My grandfather believes that there is a very very high chance that he was exposed. He hasnt had the testing, though. My mom had a hysterectomy when she was 34. She was having excessive bleeding for 3 months. Never thought 2 things like that could possibly be related...

Autoimmune diseases are on the rise in general. 1 in 5 Americans has a diagnosed autoimmune disease though I think the numbers are higher. Why is this happening? Probably a culmination of poor nutritional standards in the American food industry, increased exposure to pollution especially endocrine disruptors, increased use of prescription medications, increased use of antimicrobial and antibacterial cleaners. In other words, our society is living an extremely artificial lifestyle. Could Agent Orange be one of the causes? Sure, but I think it's a combination of chemicals that anyone could be exposed to whether they're a vet or not.

My parents were never in the military, however, my cousins dad was exposed to agent orange and both of my cousins have suffered from fertlity problems, my female cousin went in for testing and they could never find anything wrong with her, but it took her 7 years of ttc before she even got pregnant then another 2 before she carried a baby to term and her brother had similar issues.

My dad fought in Vietnam. I'm not sure if he was exposed to AO or not though. My maternal grandfather fought in the Korean War; again, I'm not sure if he was exposed to anything or not.

My father was in Vietnam, though never exposed as far as he knows.

PCOS and diabetes ran rampant in his family long before he went to Vietnam.

Both my great-aunts had it and I can see traces of it in my aunts and some of my cousins.

It definitely runs in his side of our family.

My father is a vietnam era vet never exposed to agent orange (never saw vietnam spent most of his time in Germany) but in speaking to my mother PCOS runs in my family (mom's side) I am just the first to be diagnosed because no one knew what it was. My grandmother had many symptoms including having to take meds to bring on AF. My mother and her sister have some of the symptoms too. My grandmother and aunt both had fertility issues also.

My Grandfather (on father's side) was exposed to Agent Orange when he would load the stuff onto the planes where he was stationed in Japan at the U.S. base. He was exposed a great deal and caused him to have tons of health problems regarding his lungs and it eventually killed him. I never thought this could be a link...but now it could be a slight possibility. Then again, I have a cousin on my mother's side who has be dx with PCOS and an aunt who has had simular problems often associated with PCOS. Its unclear if my grandfather on my mother's side was ever exposed to Agent Orange...even though he did serve for his country in Australia.

No military history or agent orange exposure in my family. Also, no history of PCOS in my family history until me...and then my younger sister. Even our older sister is untouched by it. There must be some sort of genetic link somewhere though...

My dad was a Vietnam Vet. He wasn't in the high consentrated areas of agent orange but he was exposed. I have PCOS along with many other problems, and my sister was born with mental problems. Dad has always thought it was because of the agent orange but it's never been proven.

Bingo!
And for me, my paternal grandfather was in the military and was stationed nearby the bases where a great deal of plutonium testing was going on in the southwest. BUT I have cousins that aren't part of the same paternal line, their grandfathers were brothers with my grandfather, and they have same family history.

I have been told that some toothpastes contain trace ingredients that are similar to the makeup of agent orange also (I now use all natural). . . Some highway departments in the country still use it under a different name to kill large areas of vegetation for new road construction fast and easily, ( I have family that works for the DOT)
