I don't see why weight would be an issue for Oprah to avoid addressing PCOS on her show. There are many faces to PCOS and some of us are thin, fluffy and anywhere in-between. The symptoms of PCOS aren't always caused by weight and the problem lies in trying to break the vicious cycle of symptoms, a lot of times caused by insulin resistance. Heck, if she just did a show on that, I'm sure more people would become aware of PCOS too.
BTW, I've always hated Rush Limbaugh, but after reading that comment he made toward the Dixie Chicks struggling with infertility, I loathe him!

I know there has been a bunch of threads about sending post cards to Oprah and Montel and other shows like that, telling them about PCOS and what we are trying to do... From what i have read Kat knows someone on the Oprah Show and has been on Oprah a few times and no luck on there either i just find it odd that woman wouldnt want to help other woman out.
I actually did send postcards and e-mails to both Oprah and Montel about doing a PCOS story. . . it hasn't gotten us anywhere!

Maybe Oprah hasn't done a show because there is so little known about the disease. I have always said, we can put a man on the moon and put hair on a man's head, but we can't seem to figure out how to stop hair from growing on women (where it shouldn't) and can't figure out why women suffer from infertility problems...I still say, if a man were experiencing it--there'd be more to know. While we've "come a long way baby", we still suffer from the "oh, it's just your hormones crap".
By the way, how many users are there of us? Maybe we should all bombard their emails. Everyone send an email to each about PCOS. Send a personal story along with it because it affects women differently and so many truly touching ways. But we would need to be concerted in our effort and all send the email within the same time frame so it would be obvious we're trying to reach them.

It was back in 2002-ish for a weight loss story/emotional eating show. Actually, there were two of us on with PCOS...we both spoke to a senior producer about possibly doing a show...

There's actually a lot known. I think that part of it has to do with something that happened with Dr Phil (when he was still on Oprah) years ago. I can't recall what he said, but it triggered a nasty backlash from the pcos community that wasn't very constructive. It could have been used as a 'teaching' opportunity, but the letters and emails were really mean...

The membership count is listed at the bottom of the board on the main page. It's around 51,000.
I've posted my thoughts on how to approach the media on several threads over the years...
There are several very effective things that can be done that don't require 'everyone' getting involved.
- Respond to the magazine interview requests that I post regularly.
- Contact your local newspaper and television health reporters and ask them to tell YOUR story. Most reporters don't do stories to 'get the word out' (about any disease)...they do stories that have 'a story'.
- Work on beating PCOS... Get serious about healthy eating and physical activity (not necessarily 'dieting' per se, but a regular program of health). Take your meds (if you take them) on time, and as directed... Be proactive with your medical team... Keep a journal of what you're doing, because THAT will become your story.
- Thank media outlets that do stories featuring pcos or cysters. (did anyone write CNN and thank them when Tithers was on last week? Or when our other cyster appeared in the April edition of Fitness?) If pcos wasn't mentioned, or only briefly mentioned, politely ask them to consider doing a larger feature story on pcos...

i bet oprah has pcos and doesn't want to admit to it...
hello - she doesn't have kids, she has weight issues, she's got to be IR...who knows what kind of work she gets done on herself - electrolysis, etc...she can't be the spokeswoman for everything now!

I don't get it, so because women were mean they decided not to do a show on PCOS ?
I'm sure people are mean about other things as well, I doubt that mean emails and letters would stop her from doing a show.
By the way, what could Dr. Phil have said that was so horrible, that we're all hairy apes or something ??
Also, when Tithers was on CNN, did she mention you or this website, soulcysters ?
I have also came across only one person who knew what this was and that was my gynecologist. Even my gp didn't know what it was. After my diagnosis from my gyno, my gp asked me to "remind him" what PCOS was. I laughed all the way outta his office. I am so glad to have found this site. I get so many answers from the posts. I agree that there should be more people interested in this disease. As there r so many of us out there. Honestly I have never heard of any celebrities out there with it.
Just a side note for celebrities that have PCOS- Kate Gosselyn of Jon and Kate Plus 8 fame has mentioned several times that she was dx with PCOS and concieved both of her multiples with IUI due to PCOS. Perhaps we could email her and ask her to do some PR work for the cause?

Oprah did briefly talk about it one time when she had a woman on there who hid the fact that she "shaved" everyday from her husband. It was just a segment, but she did mention PCOS. Its definitely a topic that she could do a whole show on. She could surely shed some light on it by giving it much needed exposure.
Upon further enquiring about PCOS with peoples that dont have it, answered honestly that they would NEVER want to tell anyone that they had this disease, that it would be embarrassing and couldnt pay them a dime to go on day time TV and talk about it. So Im sure Oprah has PCOS but she (and Tyra) would prob be to emabarrased to admit or talk about it? Tyra's show would take the piss and laugh at the guests through poker faces.
