There is a very famous and well known Jamaican reggae singer by the name of Lady Saw, she has PCOS and she even wrote a song about her issues. When she does concerts, she talks about her issues with infertility. Her song is very touching and it can be found on the videos on this site.

Baby Aspirin=BFP on 4-20-09!
I've actually written the Oprah Show trying to get them to do a story on PCOS.........I guess the media is just happy to continue to blame "ALL" obesity on gluttony, lack of self control and greed.
AMEN, CYSTER!!!!!!!!! That is so frustrating that I feel embarrassed about my weight because I know that everyone thinks that I am overweight because I eat 3 meals a day of oreo's covered in chocolate syrup with a side of fried chicken and a couple of 920 calorie burritos.
I wish more people would talk about PCOS in the news!!
I wish more women with pcos would take the time to actually READ the information that comes out about pcos...and then go the extra mile to thank the researchers and/or publication for shining a spotlight on pcos.
What a difference that would make.
How many pcos studies have you read this month?

OMG I totally feel the same way .. even when I was in highschool and playing 2 different sports and doing volunteering it was hard to shed the weight (this was before i had been put on any meds, well i didn't start taking them till mid grade 12) and i couldn't understand it .. I'm not a big eater at all and I don't lay around all day and it frustrates me to think thats how some ppl see it ...
I think if they did a show on PCOS it would shed light on millions more women who didn't even know they had it. And those women who were told by their doctors to just lose weight or go on the birth control pill or take this medication and suddenly you're cured would come forward and start demanding a medical practice devoted to the treatment of PCOS. It's frustrating for someone to be bounced around from OB/GYN to diabetes doctors to dermatologists, etc. and still not know or understand the extent of their symptoms. It's like pieces of a puzzle that will never be solved. Come on, media, get with the program!

Okay, so just went through this entire thread. The celebs are interesting, but ladies, the only way anyone will talk about PCOS more is if we do it. I recently posted on my Mommy and Me board about having it. I only joined a few months ago and have developed friendships so I thought it was worth sharing.
Anyway, we don't "need" Oprah. We who have it are the best people to explain it and its affects. Spreading the word starts with us and yes it can be hard. I remember when I told my mom. Her response was "Well, you didn't get that from me." My mother also has an overactive thyroid though so she has always been thin. Now, in her fifties she has gained weight in classic PCOS form (belly fat). She also has A LOT of facial hair and she has thin hair like me. So really, what are the chances she doesn't have it? Anyway, just saying...we're the best spotlight anyone can bring to PCOS. :o)

These are all really thoughtful replies.
I'm currently a junior at a women's college. This site may have just encouraged me to start a support group through my college's health center. Do you think that would help? I STILL have to remind friends what PCOS is, even though I'm on some of the same medication as they are (just for different reasons).
I think that would be a very valuable contribution! I hope you do it! I think you would help a lot of women!
