Question Cervical Dysplasia

I know that cervical dysplasia is a common thing, abnormal papsmears coming back. I've had my paps come back abnormal for years. I, at one time, started a period (which I found out wasn't a period) on October 15, 1998 and it ended on June 19, 2003, after a d&c and at the removal of a fibroid. Since then, I'd not had any abnormal paps. I'm wondering if pcos can have anything at all to do with that. Of course, I have to get another cervical biopsy (I always end up with cold sweats and in the ER with bad pain after them) on July 10th to find out what it is. Next week, though, I go to a pcos specialist and have another ultrasound to look at the ovaries. I've met with this doctor before. She's quite negative, but I've decided I won't let anyone tell me there's no chance to have a baby. All I have left is my hope. I can't let her or anyone take that away from me. I guess my point, my question is, are abnormal paps and dysplasia common among those with pcos? Do you experience them too? Thanks again everyone *hugs*

I had an abnormal pap last march 2005 and then they did a biopsy. It came back that I had cervical dysplasia. So in april 2005 they froze it off. It was a procedure called the Leep. Well I went back 1 month after and it was gone. So I went back 6 months later and I had cervical dysplasia again. I was told it wasn't as bad as the first time so I was to wait until may to come back and see them. Well they wouldn't see me in may because I didn't have insurance anymore. We just got new insurance and I go to a new doctor in 2 weeks to have it checked out. I have constant pain in my left ovary area. They have done lots of ultrasounds and it shows nothing. So i'm wondering if it has to do with the dysplasia. Do you have any pain down there? We want to try to have a baby too so hopefully they will get it all straightened out quickly. If you want to e-mail me feel free. I check my e-mail at least 2 times a day.

I have also had a few abnormal pap tests. I was convinced it was all related, especially because it was during "outbreaks" of PCOS side effects...but every Dr. I have been to says it is not related at all....

Dysplasia is NOT related to PCOS, I screen pap smears all day so I am a bit of an expert on the subject. I dont know if your docs have told you but dysplasia is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), an STD, its also called genital warts or condyloma. You can get it burned or frooze off but there is a chance that it might come back. Generally we look for 3 normal paps after an abnormal to say you are no longer high risk for HPV. It is fairly common mostly because the woman will get treated but her partner wont so he keeps giving her the virus over and over again. Also if the warts arent external the internal HPV can be really hard to see, even by the doc. I hope I am not too upfront but it makes me mad when docs dont tell the patients about what is actually happening to them, like most docs dont tell the patients that its an STD. This just causes more infections in the future. If you girls want to ask me questions you can always PM me.

I was dx w/ HPV and I had the leep procedure done then I had another pap it FINALLY came back normal . I had another one done a few months later and it came back abnormal In the above statement Lubby23 said that my partner can be giving me the virus again. When he went to get checked out they told him that he doesn't have HPV. What test or medication can he take to stop giving it to me?

Thats kinda a hard thing to answer. Men arent as easily treated for HPV as women. The problem is that on the woman you can see into the cervix and stain it to find a lesion and try to treat her, unless the man has a visible lesion it is extremely difficult to treat him. Also when a woman is treated they usually stain the cervix and a lesion will turn white and the docs will burn or freeze that area, however, it is a virus, extemely small, and may be in other areas of the vigina or cervix and doesnt get treated. So even if your DH is 100% free of the virus, the doc may not be able to get all of the virus in one treatment. We often get paps that are abnormal after treatment, but dont give up, get as much treatment as possible and hope that it will be cured.
