I posted this to the pregnancy forum but no one has answered it. I hope this is not inappropriate to post here, if so would a moderator please delete it. Has anyone found in their reading about pre-term labor, if it is normal to have a soft, low cervix in early pregnancy? I don't remember it being this way last time and I am just wondering if it is because I've had a baby already or if it should be checked. Thank you.
my cervix was "very soft, definitely incompetent" when my doc put the cerclage in at 13 weeks. i'm sure this was much softer than the typical change from having a previous birth. you should demand to be checked by someone who knows what they are doing so that you can put your mind at ease or be watched more carefully if they suspect anything.
best wishes.

Thanks Sheri--I am going to mention it to my doctor next week and I am calling an OB I know tonight. It has been that way for about a week and at first it didn't really register but the past couple days I paid more attention, and it definitely is soft and low. I just don't know what is normal from having had a baby before (I stalled at 4 cm though and ended up a section) or what could be a warning sign. So just to be certain I'm going to ask him to check it.
Hopefully your doc will have some answers for you. If there is an issue with your cervix, they can plan to do a cerclage between 12-14 weeks. Be persistent with your doc. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to take charge with our healthcare, unless you have a really good ob that you can trust.
Good luck!

Well my OB friend didn't seem concerned, she said that what I'm describing is not uncommon and is due to pregnancy hormones. So I feel better but then she didn't examine me and God knows I'm no doctor. So I am still going to mention it to my actual OB, just in case, I'm sure he'll be doing an internal exam anyway.
katja, if it makes you feel any better, I've never seen anyone on this board have an unexplained problem with IC after giving birth to a baby at term. I'm sure cervical trauma can happen during delivery that can cause problems in later pregnancies, but I'm pretty sure that is rare and you would also know about it. It seems, from my observation, that the cysters who have IC discovered it in their first pregnancies - either through a loss or through the close monitoring by a competent doctor. There are other cases, like Kim, who had a loss after delivering their first baby at least 10 weeks early.
In summary, I personally don't think you have anything to worry about. BUT you should not ignore your instincts. Insist on getting at least one transvaginal ultrasound to check for shortening of the cervix or funneling.

Katja, you're going to be paranoid all the way through your pregnancy, and that's fine. Somebody has to watch out for your little one!
I agree that IC rarely shows up after a full-term birth. However, like Sheri, my cervix was VERY soft when I had a preventative cerclage placed. The doc said that proves I have IC. Get as many exams and cervical U/S as you think you need.
is 9 weeks too early to find out about IC. I just checked my cervix on a whim and it was so open I dound get my index finger in it,,, and it felt so deep I was scared!!! I go to the u/s tomorrow, should I demand to see the doc then? I also have an OB appt on Monday. HELP!
