Default On changing from meds to alternatives

I've been diagnosed since I was 13 and have been on BCP's since then. I was diagnosed insulin resistant 6 years ago and have been on Gluchophage since. I went to a natural herb store with a girlfriend the other day and the woman there (very knowledgeable) was talking about natural vs. script meds.

Has anyone come off of their script meds after so long to go on a more holistic natural approach? If so, what did you do and what were the effects? Which do you prefer?

I have lurked around here for years and finally decided to register and ask this question.

Thanks in advance for any information!

YES, you can get off prescriptions and switch to natural alternatives. I'm an herbalist, too, and I know quite a few people who have. Since you've been on drugs for a long time, you can't just stop taking your meds. What I would suggest to add herbs for blood sugar, such as licorice root, cinnamon, or whatever combination your herbalist suggests, then slowly back off the drugs, even cut them in half if you need to, so you make sure your body adjusts to the change. It might take some time to get off them, depending on how quickly your body can adjust. As far as the BCP, I would suggest using NPC (progesterone cream) and other herbs for balancing hormones before you just stop taking it, take the herbs for at least 3-6 months, then stop the pill. As a rule of thumb, for every year you have been sick and on drugs, you will need to take herbs for at least a month (take them GOOD, not just sporatically) to get results. So if you've been sick for 10 years, give yourself at least one for herbs to really start making changes - you have to stick to it, and you might need to change your diet, too. If you have any other questions, please feel free, that's why we are here! And welcome to SC!
