Wow Candace, thats alota beef! We've had alot of events here in Manitoba to support beef farmers. The other day, Burger King was selling Whoppers for $1 and McDonalds was giving away a coupon for a free burger when you purchased a burger. Almost all of the restaurants in town are selling beef products as specials. We've also had those big truck loads come to town and sell beef for a buck a pound but I think I might need to find me a Zehrs! I think its great that Canadians have come together to help out the farmers.

I'm vegetarian for ethical reasons, and if mad-cow disease hasn't demonstrated that there need to be alternatives to eating meat, I'm not sure what will...
I will not support the bloody and senseless murder of millions of cows.
Mad-Cow, the meat mishaps being investigated in Aymler - are all victories for us vegetarians! More and more people will realize how wrong it is to eat meat.

I hate more than anyone to see animals suffer needlessly. BUT my outlook on vegetarianism: FOOD CHAIN. Since you felt free to share your opinion with us, I will do the same.
LOL- I just had to respond- I loved the "freezer pic" you sent me...
You guys will be set for a mighty long time- dinner at Candice's!!

P.S. The food chain rocks! Three cheers for sharp teeth!!

I was a vegitarian for over a year once upon a time. And I got feircely sick.
Now, don't get me wrong, it can be healthy if you take vitimins and tofu, and all the wonderful things that god DIDn'T give us on this good earth of ours, or, you can eat a hamburger.
I am ethical, in the way that, all these cattle would be being slautered for nothing if weren't doing something with the damn meat.
Burning the carcasses and no one getting anything out of it.. now that would be a tragety.

DH was saying they are going to have to slaughter 60,000 cows and they are just going to bury them ??
Why not ship them off to a starving country or something ? I am sure that there are butchers who would donate time and energy so that all that beef wont go to waste..
Somehow we forget we can get e-coli from lettuce and sprouts...hepatitis A from Strawberries...salmonella from cantelope skin etc etc etc etc....
Its all in how you choose to live...I realize this isnt a "who eats meet and who is better becuz they dont" thread but I think the point was to support our local farmers who are suffering becuz of the mad cow scare...
Thanks JMHO

I support my area farmers here. I buy half a cow every fall. My freezer always has meat in it til time to buy another the next year. I agree with the food chain thing. And we cysters do need all the protein we can get. What better way to get it than to support our cattle farmers.

I've heard all the "food chain" arguments, and the "what would we ever do with all the cows if we don't slaughter and eat them? Wouldn't the world be overpopulated with cows?"....heard it all before.
I agree, that it's no fault of the farmers that they are in this industry - at the end of the day, it's the government that supports this because there's lots of money to be made, and because we as a society continue to consume beef. Now, the farmers are suffering because of it!
In my opinion, there are many alternatives to eating meat in the world - there are entire countries that are almost entirely vegetarian (i.e. India), and it may be for cultural or religious reasons, but people respect animals. And the answer to vegetarianism isn't just "tofu and vitamins" - that's such a huge misconception. I've been vegetarian my entire life, and have more variety in my diet than almost all my carnivorous friends. In fact, I once tried to eat meat and felt completely ill - perhaps it was having someone else's blood in my body, or consuming someone else's flesh....
The answer is simple - if we stop consuming meat, cows wouldn't suffer because they're artificially fed hormones and inseminated so that they populate. They wouldn't be cramped in horrible living conditions, absorbed in each other's waste. After that, they're senselessy murdered - often their head is chopped off, their eyes are carved out while they're still alive, no one hears their wailing...and they bleed to death. They're skinned (so we can wear lovely leather shoes, belts, and jackets), and then they're carved up and fancifully fried....all for our consumption.
I have trouble understanding how one can look at the steak on their plate, and not realize that they're eating something that's been murdered.
We wouldn't slaughter our cats and dogs for consumption, would we? Why are cows, pigs, and chicken different? SO - when cows get ill, and there are companies who serve deadstock...it's really no surprise that meat consumption goes down, and people actually begin to question their habits.
This has been a longstanding debate, and I appreciate the forum to share my opinion! I also really appreciate everyone sharing theirs....

Well I can agree with you on some points, but I don't wear fur ew gross) and I don't wear leather.
I just personally think that its natural TO eat meat. If it wasn't our bodies wouldn't need the things meat contains, and every animal under the sun would be completely vegitarian.

I agree, I dont wear fur or leather, I find the thought of having parts of a dead carcass on me a bit to gross.

Just curious to know what exactly your rebuttle is to the food chain argument. If we were meant to be vegetarians, wouldnt it just make sense that all species would be the same? Who but humans can demostrate a better example of what can happen to the body if it is deprived of the nutrients that meat contains.
FYI: Your conception of how a cow is killed is grossly incorrect. I wont argue that perhaps something like that hasnt happened when some no good egotistic farmer felt the need to show how mighty he is. My husband has worked in a meat packing plant in Alberta and currently works on the kill floor at a Maple Leaf plant here in town. To my surprise, and I'm sure to yours, the animals die VERY VERY painlessly. Have you ever been in a packing plant? Its not even close to as bad as you think.
Granted, there are individual farmers that slaughter thier own cattle. With me living on the prairies, I will vouch that every cow that I have seen slaughtered has been done so humanely.

Surely you didnt just imply that because I eat meat, I dont respect animals? I have a feeling that you think I am some kind of animal hating fool. Another FYI: I volunteer at the local humane society, I foster animals for another animal shelter, recently saved three kittens that were going to get put to sleep, belong to the PETA AND make a yearly contribution to them. I dont think that I am some kind of saint, I just wanted to make it clear that I do love animals more than you might think.
Quick little story for you here: Dh and I went fishing yesterday. He had live worms to use as bait. I got terribley angry with him for this and in the end, I set the lil wormies free
I realize that no matter how it is done, you will still argue that it is incorrect to kill an animal for food. Like you said, everyone is entitled to thier opinion.
