Hi there! I've had IPL a few times, most of them with my dermatologist and 1 time with my beautician (who is licensed to do that). Well, with the dermatologist, it really was a life-saver. It reduced the scars ALOT and helped with the large cystic type acne at the time and my skin is a lot smoother because of it. Buuuuut, you need to keep at it with "maintenance updates" and it's just too expensive for me to do that (sigh). IPL also hurt me during the procedure.

The one time I went to my beautician (who was way cheaper), she also did it, but I really didn't see any results at all. I'd say get it done at a Dr's office.

I found IPL cleared my skin somewhat, but the acne came back. So I would recommend it for scars and just general complexion improvement and smoothness.

If you can afford to keep it up, then perhaps it would really be great against acne, I don't know.

I've never tried a chemical peel, but by beautician did recommend something called a "green peel". She showed me before and after pictures of her clients and it really does seem to work, but I'm guessing that the acne will come back anyhow and then you'd have to do it again, so I won't do that. PLUS, it's meant to be quite a painful procedure (feels hot and burning and prickly?). However, the before and after pictures were quite amazing.

I have gotten several chemical peels. They really seem to help keep my skin clear. The last time I went to get a facial, the esthetician recommended a microdermabrasion. I could tell that my skin was much smoother but it didn't seem to help my breakouts as much as the peels.

That's great that it helped with your breakouts. May I ask, do you have more cystic acne or small pimples? Also, can I ask how much the chemical peels cost and is there a specific type (name or product) for the chemical peel you get done? Does it hurt?

I had an alpha/beta that is by MD Skincare. The peel does not hurt at all (at least the way I have them done). In fact, I am almost asleep during most of them because I have them done after a massage. You can get a version of this product (not the professional strength) at Sephora for ~$70. My facial plus 1 hour massage is $100. I go about every 6 months or so. My acne was bad as a teenager. I took acutane, and it cleared me up. Now I have smaller blemishes around my chin and jawline. Good luck getting everything cleared up!

Thanks for the info! Next time I get my microdermabrasion done I'm going to ask about it. Gosh I love massages, I could actually use one now, I should tack that on to the end of my facial too :-)

I just had my first peel about a week ago. I asked my dermatologist specifically for it because my friend has been getting them and she looks amazing. I thought it would clear up the red bumps on my forehead. I can tell you it almost instantaneously took those away. However, the peel hurt pretty bad and I have to go back for five more....I really dread the pain but after one peel it has helped. I had a 20% salicylic acid peel. To give you perspective, the stuff you can buy in the store like Clearasil and whatnot, is 1%. This stuff hurt terribly....but it only lasted for a minute or so. My face looked pretty awful two and three days later but now it looks great. I am hoping by the time I go back for my second one I will have forgotten how bad the pain was.

I had a chemical peel, a double TCA and before that a glycolic. The TCA is hot as all get out!! It burned like the dickens! I worked at a spa so I got it all done for free, but my cystic acne is now back. So I don't do that stuff anymore.
