Ok, I talked to a naturopathic doctor awhile back and he told me that there is a link between the chicken pox virus and PCOS. I had Chicken Pox when I was 13, and he said that girls who get them when they are older (like after puberty starts already and they are menstruating) that they often end up with PCOS. I just wondered if anyone else had Chicken Pox later in their life.... Thanks in advance!
Lisa - won't work for me...I had CP when I was 5 years old! It was a really bad (good) case too, with them in my hair, my mouth - EVERYWHERE! Fun! I'm not looking forward to it in my kids...

This is interesting....although I had chicken pox at 7 or 8 years old, I DO get Shingles.

I actually never had the chicken pox. In fact, I got the vaccine about 7 years ago so that I'd have the immunity b/c I didn't want to get it as an adult. However, I just found out yesterday that I still don't have the immunity! I guess the vaccine didn't take? I have to ask my PCP about this next week at my annual b/c my RE discovered this in his testing and suggests that I might want to get the vaccine again before getting pg (if I'm not already). I don't know if it has anything to do with PCOS, but it's an interesting question. Hope you get an answer!

Could you tell us more about what your doctor said about a possible connection between chicken pox and PCOS? I think this is really interesting! Apparently Chicken Pox and Shingles are both caused by the varicella-zoster virus - which I think is a form of the Herpes virus. Apparently once you have the virus it does not totally go away (like when the Chicken Pox has run its course) - but it migrates back into the body and is thought to remain "dorment" usually for many years. In about 10-20% of people who have had the Chicken Pox - the virus will reactivate (ususally after age 60) and present as Shingles.
Perhaps it would be worth knowing more about what the virus might actually be doing while it is "dormant".
Also I hope you don't mind my asking - but for the poll - why did you pick the cut off points that you did? The reason that I am asking is becuase I believe that the average age of beginning menstruating is decreasing - (and premature puberty has been know to occur in PCOS patients) - so you may be missing so girls who had Chicken POX prior to 13 but who began menstruating prior to that.
Also did your doctor mention anything about the Chicken Pox Vaccine?
August: I am not sure what the connection was....I only saw the doctor 1 time...As for the cutoffs I chose...I don't know...I guess I just was using my own experience...since I was 13 when I got the virus. lol I will look more into it and see if I can find anything. I just thought it was interesting!

Well I think it is a very interesting theory and I am so glad that you posted - and the ages you picked might actually be pretty good ones - in terms of chicken pox - since as I understand it Chicken pox is generally more severe in older children/teens and adults than it is in small children - although it can also be more dangerous for infants.
Anyway very good job in coming up with this information! If you choose to return to that doctor - please let us know if he has any more information about this or additions to the theory. This is really so interesting and I would like to know a lot more about it!
