I just got diagnosed last month with PCOS. It's been kinda a shock to me and my parents. Anyway, now i'm on meds but looking to see a naturopath soon to treat this thing from all sides. I have now cut all "white" carbs from my diet, but eating small amounts of brown rice and multi-grain breads. How about you? What are your experiences with meds and natural therapies and what you do to cope/relax etc? I've just started yoga too.
I'm Chinese American, got diagnosed with PCOS back in September. How are you adjusting to the new diet change? I know Asians eat a lot of rice and noodles- I realize that I can't avoid this stuff 100%, but I've tried to cut down.
Cutting out white rice/bread hasn't been a problem because we were already eating brown rice/multigrain sometimes. Basmati rice is apparently ok if you don't want to give up white rice entirely. But cutting out noodles - aargghhhh - I LOVE NOODLES !! And going out is difficult as it's pretty hard to avoid rice or noodles if you go to asian places. Western places are a bit easier - protein and veges - hehe. My main concern is avoiding losing any weight as I'm already quite thin.
Did your doctor tell you that you HAD to cut out all the white carbs? My doctor looked at my lab results and said I didn't have to since I'm okay for the time being, but just to be on the safe side, I've been trying to eat less white bread (even though I love sourdough), pasta, white rice, and potatoes. I too am on the lighter side, although in the last year, I've gained about 10 lbs- this was confusing to me, because I've always worked out a few times a week. But my doctor told me that all my symptoms- the acne, the weight gain, and my random periods were related to pcos. So I dont mind just losing the 10 pounds that I put on this year... If you don't mind me asking, has the pcos affected your appearance in any way?
My doctor said i shouldn't have those things - i am insulin resistant - so thought it easiest just to give them up when i'm at home when i can control what i eat. i still eat those things when i go out. re appearance, my main thing is acne, and mild hirsuitism on my belly - not that bad but i guess that depends on who you are comparing yourself to - other asians or someone else?? can i ask what (if any) meds you are on or if you have taken the natural approach? i'm still a little dazed about what to do about things. all information helps.
Hey Chinese cysters.. I'm Chinese too (by blood), born in Indonesia but live in the Netherlands. I've just been diagnosed last month as my period has been absent for 3.5 months.
My gyn also didn't tell me to cut down on anything (thank goodness, I can't live without noodles or rice!). My only PCOS symptoms are irregular periods and ovarian cysts... no weight issue, no acne and no hirsuitism.

Since my periods are very irregular, my mom has always advised me to use this Chinese medicine called Bai Fung Yuan (I'll have to double check the spelling), which is specifically for "women's health". They are tiny black pills made of black-boned chickens. I was personally too lazy to take it (plus it's not that easy to find it in Netherlands compared to Indonesia) and it was much easier to use contraceptive pills, so I can't tell you whether it works or not. My mom is convinced because my auntie has been using this medicine for a long time and it seems to help regulating her period. My auntie is 50+ years old and still hasn't got her menopause (therefore she still have good skin, hair, etc). My mom seriously believed that this is due to the Bai Fung Yuan.
Since 3 days ago, I'm on Provera and will start on Clomid because we're planning to have kids. If none of these work after some time, guess what I will try next!
Let me know if you're interested, so I can check the correct spelling + manufactory info, etc.
hi fan. yeah i think i have heard of those pills - name sounds familiar but i dont think my mum has every mentioned them in relation to periods. my mum like dong quai i think. but i rarely ever took it.
I am not fully chinese but my grandmother is. I was formally diagnosed with PCOS at 28 years old... 15 years after my first symptoms. It was frustrating having to wait 15 years to hear that your problems have a name.
The elders told me that eatting bittermelon would help with diabetes. I hate the taste, so I was told that you can juice the melon with a wedge of apple to make it easier to swallow. My great great aunt treated her type II diabetes with bittermelon soup with chicken. The doctor was very surprised that she manage to treat it so quickly with diet.

It's sort of a double-whammy because Type 2 diabetes runs in our family.
Ewww, man, I hate bitter melon. I'm a Chinese American, got diagnosed just a couple of weeks, though I've had symptoms for about a year. I'm worried out of my mind about the future. Currently taking Yasmin, and some Flutamide that I haven't yet started taking.
Hey guys, I'm Chinese too... This is off topic but I love bittermelon if it is cooked right or raw and marinated in soy sauce + spices. It's an acquired taste...
I'm lean PCOS and am not insulin resistant. In fact my fasting insulin is kind of low, as are my postprandial sugars.
If anyone is TTC and wants to compare notes let me know...
