Angry Cholesterol

Hi

I have been told I have high cholesterol and would like to know if it is a problem to do with PCOS.
I have been a vegetarian for 17years and do not know how to bring it down. Can anyone help?

Hi

I've got high bp, and high cholesteral. I take 10 lipitor every morning, and this has brought my cholesteral down to 5.1

Lipitor is the #1 med Rx'd to lower it.
Warning.....Do not eat or drink anything with grapefruit in it.
You can have a very bad side effect/reaction.

I found the warning 6 months after DH started taking it and he was eating grapefruits daily for his diet!!
That DR didn't warn us.

This new pharmisist did tell him last week with his new refills.

My rule is I look up every new med on the net to check for warnings and dangers. I make sure to look at at least 3 different sites because of the diference of opinions.
I also contact my pharmacy and tell them what I have and they now double check it.

So many DR's give out samples so you don't even get the inserts that should come with it.
Plus your pharmisist can't look for drug interactions.

A new herbal med called Policosanol w/co enzyme Q10 from Source naturals is supoosed to be awesome.
It can reduse your #'s by up to 24% with in 3 months!

So this sounds very good.
This ingrediant is suposed to be very safe with no bad/adverse side effects reported.

But read up on any med or vitamin BEFORE you start it.

Good Luck,

Patty

Default Mine is high too

My cholesterol has been very high for 2 years. In 2000 my choelsterol was 197 (norm is 125-200) and my triglycerides 187 (norm is 10-140)I have tried to control it with diet January they were cholesterol 238 and triglycerides 294!!!! So my doctor put me on 40mg per day of Mevacor. Now I am at 155 cholesterol and 202 triglycerides I am staying on the rx until I can loose another 50lbs, dr told me today. I know the change in my diet has really helped also. I dont mind the med at all. I see no side affect from it. But I hate grapefruit so I am not worried about eating any!!! My blood pressure has always been normal though.

In my experience, I've found that regular exercise will help by lowering the total cholesterol level and increasing the high density lipids (HDL) whilst lowering the undesirable low density lipids (LDL).

Taking oatbran, avocado (high in good fat that actually helps in lowering cholesterol) and Flora pro-active spread (taste like margarine) regularly also helps. As will cutting out saturated animal fats.

I just re-read your post.... since you've been a vegetarian for 17 years, I guess you won't have any problems with the saturated animal fat. However, be aware of hidden saturated fats in cakes, cookies etc.

Lightbulb

I have been taking Flax Seed Oil Capusals and Omega-3 (Fish Oil). My Cholestrol has dropped close to 30 points in the last 3 months.
There are not the side effects that some RX meds have.

Good Luck

Elevated cholesterol can definitely be caused by PCOS. You can alter your cholesterol levels through eating certain foods, not eating certain foods, exercising, and reducing stress. The bottom line, though, is that you may not be able to combat it enough, thanks to the PCOS and/or genetics. I used to know a guy who had been a vegetarian for 20 years, yet his doc found he had cholesterol in the freakishly high range of *700s*. Lipitor helped him -- I'm just making the point that if you've tried it all and it didn't help enough, it may be beyond your control, and there's no stigma to taking Lipitor.

Myself, I was on it for a few years, and it helped me, but I've gone off it because me and DH are TTC, and my cholesterol jumped back up to higher than it was before :-(

As far as I know, oatmeal is porridge, yes. As in oats cooked with milk or water :-)

With the help of the lipitor my dh lowered his from 317 to 170.

So if you have it high look into meds to lower it.

Good Luck,

Patty
