I went for an abdominal sonogram last week to have a pain I’ve been having on my right side examined. I also went for blood work at my OB/GYN that same week to see if I can go back on Glucophage. So, of course, I get the results of both on the same day.
For my sonogram, I find that they still don’t know what is causing the pains I’ve been having, BUT, I have a fatty liver. Then the blood work comes back and shows that I have cholesterol levels of 227 and triglycerides of between 900-1200 (the fatty liver was giving them problems with an accurate number.
My brother who is a doctor told me that I should look into going to an Endocronologist and that I should go on Actos or Avandia. Does anyone else have these issues? And how are you handling it.
Oh, by the way, I am 5’4” tall, I weigh 168, and I’m on Weight Watchers to lose the weight (about 40 lbs), PLUS I’ve been slowly starting to exercise.

Hi there-
I stumbled onto this posting and creepy...I have the same things.
I have had this pain on my right side on the waist and we thought it was a cyst, nope that is gone, endo, nope, my gyno thinks it is just part of my intestine attached to my abdominal cavity. FISHY!
I have wondered if it is gall bladder issues before as mine comes and goes. It seems to be around ovulation and AF, though which doesn't make sense.
I also have HIGH cholesterol (240) and triglycerides and the fatty liver. I am really hesitant to take Lipotor being only 28 and with the liver issues. I am going to try and start WW this week with a friend.
hi jenn..i have to pop in here..if the cholesterol is high etc... did the dr mention what to take???
omega fatty acids are good for cholesterol as well is garlic and oatmeal.... as far as natural remedies. i know some people who just ate oatmeal who lowered it dramatically
i hear actos is really good for insulin resistance..if you dont want to do met again...
sorry to hear bout this xox jenn

I have fatty liver and somewhat high cholesterol as well. Since my liver doesn't seem able to tolerate met I recently started actos. From what my endo has told me it is possible that the actos will help with everything... the high cholesterol, fatty liver and insulin reisitance.
I know that there are a few docs out there doing clinical trials on fatty liver treatment with actos/avandia.

Thank you all for your replies! The funny thing is....I have NO idea which doctor to consult right now. My OB wants my Primary's "permission" to be on Glucophage, and my Primary doesn't seem to know what PCOS is because when I told him I was on Glucophage he was like "isn't that a diabetic drug?". Sigh, banging my head on a brick wall seems like it might be more fulfilling in this endeavor!
I just want to find 1 doctor who can treat me for all PCOS related issues and leave the GYN stuff to the GYN and the internal medicine to the PCP.
The other thing - no one else discussed alternatives to the Gluc - except to take a Lipitor-like medication. And like thinkthin98, I am 27 and don't want to start taking a medication I might have to take for the rest of my life. I'd rather get it down taking an Actos/Avandia/Glucophage type medicine to treat the PCO instead of the symptoms of PCO.

Hi,
Obesity, insulin resistance, pcos, diabetes are linked with fatty liver, high triglycerides, and unhealthy cholesterol readings. Aside from the medications, the real thing that seems to reverse these medical problems is weight loss, eating a lower carb or insulin resistance type of diet, and regular exercise.
I've got the same medical conditions, I can relate. Take care.
I know you posted this some time ago, but I just read it and wanted to reply. I have high triglycerides. They were 1280 a couple of months ago and have gone up to 1750. I am sure your doctor told you that this is WAY too high. My doctor has put me on Gemfibrozil to reduce the triglycerides. The thing is that lipitor and other medicines that lower cholesterol your (LDLs) wont lower the triglycerides. Your brother is right, you definitley need to see an endocrinologist. Actually, the doctors that really know a lot about PCOS are usually reproductive endocrinologists, and even if you are not wanting to get pregnant, they still will have a lot of background w/PCOS.
Hope this helps!! I am struggling with it too because I was told by a doctor that if my triglycerides stay at 1750 that I will be lucky if I don't have stroke in by the time I am 30. (I am 22, 5'7, 150 lbs). So this really scared me!! Let me know what your doctor says!!
Good luck!
Rachel

Thank you for replying! I was actually wondering the other day what could happen if you have high tryglicerides, and I guess a stroke would make sense. I actually go to the endo next week and will see what he has to say. I am currently taking Glucophage and am hoping that this will reduce them somewhat, but I know that I will have to take additional steps to get them lower still.
I have actually lost 15 lbs, and need to lose about 30 more to be my "ideal" weight. So here is hoping that we both get healthier!!
