Default Chromium picolinate is making my hair fall out . . .

(x-posted in alternative remedies)

At least, this is my suspicion. I made a wholesale change in my diet and supplements a few weeks ago and noticed that I was feeling great, and then my hair started to fall out. I was losing much more than usual in the shower. My hair is really thick, so it's not noticable yet, but . . . aaaargh!!!! Of course, I started to completely freak out and I assumed that it was PCOS-related, but then I realized that the hair loss coincided with starting the supplements. I looked at what I was taking - Gaia Herbs Vitex Elixer, Chromium picolinate, inositol, and NAC - and found that women have reported hair loss with the chromium (when I searched the web). I also read that I should see the hair loss stop in about 3 days, if chromium is indeed the problem. I'll post back if anyone is interested.

There are some old threads on this board that address this topic, but I thought it was worth discussing again. In fact, I really think that there should be some kind of sticky about chromium and this side effect, since many women who already have PCOS-related hair loss may take chromium to increase insulin sensitivity. What do you all think?

I've never heard of anyone losing hair with Chromium.
Maybe you're taking in excessive amounts ?

Or maybe it's because you recently changed your diet, you might not be getting enough good nutrients ?

Paola,
My new diet is pretty nutritious, so I don't think it's that. Also, I'm not totally positive yet that it's the chromium, but if you search this site, or the web with "Chromium" and "hair loss" or "hair thinning", you will find reports of women who've had a problem with it (I'm terrible at posting links, sorry). I wasn't taking high doses, but it might have been high for me. Anyway, I'll post back in a few days to let people know if the hair thinning has slowed down. In any case, it really sucks!

What were you doing 1-3 months BEFORE you started seeing the hair loss? Were you taking the chromium then? Frequently, hair loss occurs 1-3 months after trauma/stress/drugs happened.
