I'm in the process of reading the book: The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, by Jonny Bowden. In the chapter on cinnamon, there is this recipe:

Homemade Treatment for Blood Sugars
According to Broadhurst's excellent book on diabetes, the best way to use cinnamon to help lower blood sugar and improve type 2 diabetes is to put 3 rounded tablespoons of ground cinnamon and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking soda (less if sodium is a problem for you) in a 32-ounce (quart) canning jar.
Fill the jar with boiling water and let it steep at room temperature till it's cool.
Strain or decant the liquid, discard the grounds, put a lid on the jar, and stick it in the fridge.
Drink one 8-ounce cup of the tea four times per day.
After one to three weeks, you can drop down to one or two cups a day.
Type 1 diabetics can use it too, but should start with only one or two cups per day and increase by one cup per week, monitoring blood sugar closely.
I don't know if it works, but I thought I'd pass it along.
The "Broadhurst" mentioned in the quote is C. Leigh Broadhurst, Ph.D. She's a resarch scientist at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Thanks for finding and posting that. Kat!
I don't suppose that it mentioned what the baking soda was for or if there was an optimal time to drink (like vingar seems to be most helpful prior to, or perhaps with meals).
Again, Thank You!

Nope. Didn't mention any of that. I was also wondering about the baking soda.

Boiling cinnamon sticks in water and making a strong "tea" out of it tastes lovely! It has really helped my energy levels. I no longer feel drunk/toxicated after I eat food. I think this must be helping my sugar levels.
After reading this post - and the linked one - I tried a mix of honey - about two teaspoons with about a half teaspoon of cinnamon mixed in warm water - not bad at all - will need to play with it a bit more - but I have a lot more energy today - think I may also add apple cider vinegar to the mix and see what happens.

The other post said honey would not affect blood sugars with the cinnamon - AND the Bragg's vinegar info says to take it with honey also - they honey is supposed to supply quite a few positive aspects. I know it is considered a complete food. I have not felt any rise in my sugars when I have taken it with the vinegar and no rise yesterday either with the cinnamon.
I tried it this way to work myself up to the baking soda version. That is on the agenda for tomorrow!

Hi ladies
Ok I've been lurking on this site for years now, time for me to get in on the action! Please keep me posted on any developments with the cinnamon and vinegar! I'm very interested as I'm allergic to metformin (yeah not a great thing to be allergic to with PCOS). I'm about to try doing a similar combo myself as nothing else has helped me so far.....but I'm hoping combined with some weight loss things might start improving for me. I really hope we all get where we want to be.......for me a BFP after 10 years of TTC.....
wish me luck!!! I hope we all see some results!!!

as far as honey goes, though...you want the most unrefined version and local if possible. i pay extra for raw, unfiltered honey produced locally and i really believe it is worth it. the flavor is outstanding, if nothing else.
the benefits of baking soda are not quite as clear. i would imagine that the use is advocated because it is a fantastic alkalizer. your blood should be alkaline and there are some alternative gurus that believe many health problems come from an overly acidic system. that's my guess.
One of the easiest things you can do to improve blood sugar and increase insulin is add up to a 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to your diet each day.
Some of the research highlights about the cinnamon-blood sugar connection are:
* A human study published in Diabetes Care looked at 60 people with type 2 diabetes, 30 men and 30 women with an average age of 52. They were divided into 6 groups: groups 1, 2, and 3 consumed 1, 3, or 6 g of cinnamon daily, respectively, and groups 4, 5, and 6 were given placebo capsules corresponding to the number of capsules consumed for the three levels of cinnamon.
After 40 days, all three levels of cinnamon intake reduced fasting blood glucose ranging from 18 to 29%, triglycerides 23 to 30%, LDL cholesterol 7 to 27%, and total cholesterol 12-26%. The researchers concluded that "The results of this study… suggest that the inclusion of cinnamon in the diet of people with type 2 diabetes will reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases."
* The active insulin-enhancing compounds in cinnamon are found in the water soluble portion and not the oil. Not only have they been found to increase glucose metabolism by up to 20-fold, but they also have antioxidant activity.
How to Make Cinnamon Tea
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup boiling water
black teabag (optional)
stevia
Place the cinnamon in a cup. Add the boiling water and steep for 10 minutes. Sweeten with stevia if desired.
My tips
The active compounds aren't lost with heating, so you can also try adding cinnamon to water before heating and boiling them together.
If you don't like the look or texture of tea made with ground cinnamon, try making a tea by bringing water to a boil with a piece of cinnamon bark added to it.
Try sprinkling cinnamon on salads, oatmeal, or adding a bit to chicken or meat before cooking.
Do not use more than 1/2 teaspoon a day, an amount that appears to be safe for most people.
More Health Benefits of Cinnamon
Cinnamon increases vitality and balances energy. It is particularly good for people who tend to have a hot upper body and colder lower body. I see this quite often, especially among women entering menopause. Symptoms are flushed face, sweating, insomnia with cold and dry legs and feet.
Cinnamon improves the digestion of fruits, milk, and other dairy products.
Cinnamon is also good for bloating, gas, poor digestion, arthritis, anemia, painful menstrual periods, and diarrhea.
Precautions
Cinnamon can add to the effect of insulin and other blood sugar medication. Consult a health care practitioner if you are currently taking medication to control your blood sugar.
If you're pregnant or breast feeding, don't take extra cinnamon greater then normally found in food unless recommended by your health care practitioner.

What about the cinnamon pills? I am so much more likely to take pills than actually making the tea and taking the time drink it several times a day. That's just my personality. Are the pills less affective?
