Question Clear skin w/o BC possible??!

Hi Ladies,

I am relatively new to the website but not PCOS...I'm one of the cysters who suffers with acne...I've been on and off BC for the past 10 years or so (mostly on) and wanted to get off recently...I am on 1000 mg Met ER daily which helps some but my periods and of course, my skin has gone pretty wacky...My question is this--have any of you with skin issues been able to clear up most of the issues with proper dose of Met and supplements/herbs alone? If so what has worked for you and at what dosage? This acne is making me depressed and I'm almost considering going back on the pill but long-term use of it scares me...

I was on the pill for about 10 years and do not feel it helped that much with my skin. Upon my diagnosis of PCOS in June 09, I began following nutrition recommended in The Natural Diet Solution for PCOS and Infertility by Nancy Dunne. I do believe eating whole unprocessed foods, lean meats and fresh fruits and veggies has made a significant difference in my skin which has been clear for the past 3-4 months. I am also doing no caffeine and supplementing with fish oil (for omegas) and a women's multivitamin. I don't think it is instant, but does work if you can stick to it. Plus, I have way more energy and feel better overall.

I've been on a paleo diet for 5 months and I must say that I have more energy and I lose weight more easily. However, it didn't do a darn thing for my face I have teeny tiny blackheads on my cheeks and jawline that become pimples with pms&ovulation. I hate it...and every derm I've been to treats it like teen acne because I'm 18. Gosh..I hope we can find a solution to this.....

Domino,

Forgive me but what's a paleo diet? I have lost some weight while on met with better exercise/diet (maybe 10-15 lbs) and have maybe another 10 to go to be ideally thin...though im stuck at a plateau...I have been generally trying to follow a low glycemic index diet and just sticking to better unprocessed/fewer carbs...Not much success on the acne front since stopping BC though...However I only stopped 4-5 months ago after being on it for a long time...I really am disappointed b/c I thought diet and weight loss was supposed to help and am still on Met...I think acne is the worst of the PCOS now and my fear of fertility issues later :/

Paleo diet is...well, basically you stay away from food that agricultural revolution introduced to our lives. This includes rice, wheat, soy (or any other "bean" for that matter), bread, pasta, processed sugary stuff and diary. It's not that difficult once you get used to it (less than a week for me), and it really helped me lose weight and feel better overall.

U know I don't want to jinx myself or talk too prematurely but since Ive been taking this quality GNC Triple Strength Omega 3 Fish Oil supplement, my skin has been brighter and I haven't seen new bumps, which is huge...Ive read on different sites that people have had quality fish oil/omega 3s help with hormonal acne (read reviews on acne.org)...Ive only been using it about a week and a half but Im crossing my fingers I also added extra b complex and vitamin d around the same time in addition to my multi and met *shrugs*...Just throwing it out there

I know it does thats why I want to remain skeptical--but I think its a healthy supplement to add to your pcos regimen and cant hurt unless you truly over do it--I take 2 900 omega 3 supplements a day...I think the trick is that they have to list the EPA/DHA in it...I was taking a cheaper one before that didnt list anything and did nothing for me--prob had minimal amounts of actual omega 3s or the epa/dhas (not sure how it works)...Let me know if you decide to try it and if it helps...I think i will prob still need a bump in met or need to go back to bc (not sure) b/c my cycles wakky again but im definitely glad I started taking the fish oil =)
