Since my m/c, I've been thinking about how clomid helped me ovulate and conceive, and wondering if other meds would have achieved the same effect, but helped me to not m/c. I know the doctor would probably tell me that m/c are common and so many times a reason cannot be determined for having a m/c. I know the clomid helped me ovulate because it matured eggs that previously were stunted in their growth and just got to a certain point and then stopped growing. Is it possible that while only 50 mg of clomid helped me ovulate, the eggs still weren't developed enough on that low of a dose to form a baby that wouldn't m/c? I've been tossing that thought around for several weeks now, and while I don't think it's possible (I mean, the egg DID release, so it should have been "ripe", right?), I can't help but wonder if I might have released an almost developed egg because I was on such a low dose, and that was why I m/c. Any thoughts?

I'd definitely like to see what others think about this. I've never used Clomid, but my RE wants me to try it when we TTC again. I hope you get some answers!
Personally, I don't think that has anything to do with it. I've had 4 m/c's and each one of them I was taking Follistim (an injectible) and had very ripe eggs. Unfortunately, sometimes there really is no reason for a m/c (or no known reason). You will constantly second guess yourself and drive yourself crazy if you keep thinking of different things that could have caused a m/c. It's nothing you did including the meds that you took

clomid *CAN* reduce egg quality, and many women on Clomid ovulate late (past CD 21). Late O can reduce egg quality, too. I think it can effect things, but not enough to say "clomid did it!". I conceived Daniel on Clomid, and he had a birth defect. Was it cuz of clomid? No. I conceived Ari on Avandia. He had no defects. But I still lost them both, around the same time.
I blame the PCOS, crappy/incompetent doctors, and general "bad luck" if you'd call it that.

Daniel Benjamin born/died October 4, 2004. Ari Lev born/died May 21, 2005.
I conceived twice using clomid. The first time on 50 mg. Although that baby had no apparent birth defects, we lost him in the second trimester due to IC/and a septum in my uterus. Our second pregnancy (living) we achieved on 100 mg clomid, spent pretty much the whole pregnancy on bedrest, and although born at term, he had a few congential birth problems. SO, I really don't know what to tell you. I wish we could all just conceive without any drugs, but an alternative I've read to clomid is soy. You can read about it in the Alternative therapy forum. I think I will try that next time.

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you are feeling better and that each day gets better physically and emotionally for you.
I went through the same thing last March...saw the baby's hearbeat then two weeks later found it stopped developing at 9 wks and there was no heartbeat (had a D&C). I had been feeling good since seeing the heartbeat, thinking that chances were that the baby was safe at that point...so I was shocked and devastated when I found out the bad news. My RE found it to be very suspicious that I m/c'd after seeing the h/b, so he ordered an HSG. I suspected that maybe it was because I had taken steriods and had an MRI for my back problem before my ovulation that cycle (we were not ttc at the time, the pregnancy was a big surprise)...I just couldnt figure it out.
I never thought that I would find answers as to why this m/c happened...but I eventually did.
I had my HSG, it was actually my second one (my first one was with my old doc about a year before the pregnancy). I found that I had a septate uterus during the second HSG- the first doc missed it! I was told that my chances of carrying a pregnancy to term with that condition was only about 15%. So that was the reason for my m/c. Luckily, the septum was easily fixed with a small surgery (hysteroscopy) and I recovered almost immediately.
I just wanted to share my story with you...maybe it will help you and your doctor find some answers. It's worth checking into. All the best

m/c 11/30/07 15w due to Trisomy 21...missing my baby boy
I took clomid 4 times:
1) 50 mg, no pregnancy
2)100 mg, miscarriage at 5 to 6 weeks
3)100 mg, premature delivery/loss of twins due to probable IC/PTL/PPROM
4)50 mg, currently 27 weeks pregnant with single baby
Did clomid cause my early miscarriage? Or even cause something wrong that caused my delivery of my twins at 20 weeks? Not likely. But I guess anything is possible. I really dont think it has anything to do with dosage though -- I've heard many different outcomes from many different doses of Clomid. I DEFINATELY wouldnt recommed upping your Clomid dose to more than your body needs to ovulate/conceive....that can only cause even more problems for you.

I asked my new doctor about this today, and she told me that clomid has no effect on whether or not there will be a m/c, and that there wasn't any possibility that I O'd but the egg wasn't quite ready to go yet. I was glad to hear that. Thank you guys for your responses!
Cupiecake - I noticed you're in Austin too. Do you mind if I ask what RE you were seeing? I was with the Dr. Hansard at the TX Fertility Center, but now I'm going to be seeing a regular ob/gyn instead of a specialist.
Mustardseed,
I am seeing Dr Silverberg at the same office as Hansard. Unfortunately, due to my uterine surgery, then other personal problems, I have put everything on hold with him. So I havent done any fertility treatments with him as of yet. He was great with regards to my surgery (he performed the lap and hysteroscopy) and found other problems that I didnt even know I had. I was with another RE in Seattle where I lived before.
Hope that helps!

First I am sorry for your loss. I know from experience that we look for anything to blame, because their just has to be a reason that our babies were stripped from us.
That being said. I got pg on 50 mg of clomid, ovulated on day 23, and the baby's heart stopped at 9 weeks and I had to have a D&C. My re raised my clomid to 100mg to achieve an earlier ovulation. I ovulated that time on cd 21, and m/c at 5 weeks. My RE believed that both were due to weak eggs caused by late ovulation. So the next cycle I was put on 7.5mg of Femera, ovulated on cd16, and now have a beautiful little 4 month old girl.
pa1nter - Thank you for that information, and for sharing your story with me. I will ask my dr about that when I go back next month for a new clomid prescription. After I took clomid in June, I had bw done on 7/5 because I had taken opk's all the week before and never saw a surge. Based on my bw, I had O'd already, so the latest I could have O'd was cd19 on 7/4. Do most dr's want to see O closer to cd14, since that would be the right O day for a "normal" woman with a regular 28 day cycle? Would cd19 maybe be too late?

My RE wanted me as close as possible to a cd 14 ovulation. With Emma I ovulated on CD 16. With my son I wasn't on any medication other than Metformin and I ovulated on cd 27. Go figure.
I do think that Clomid can and sometimes does have an effect. Especially when it comes to chemical pregnancy (also known as very early mc). Clomid can cause thin lining and if you have thin lining a baby might not attach. But since the baby doesnt even attach some doctors do not consider this even a pregnancy.
I did 15 cycles of Clomid, had one early mc (we THINK baby did not fully attach, lining was too thin). I finally did get PG but it was on a break from Clomid.
