Default Clomid and preventing multiples?

Hi,

I am 28, and have had PCOS since High School. My doctor suggested that I go on clomid next week bc we've been ttc for awhile. I am concerned about the chance of twins--- or in rare cases even more.

I am really concerned about the risks, and would love one healthy baby. Of course I would be happy with anything, but the risks are pretty high.

Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent multiples while taking clomid? My guess is no, but it would be nice if there was some magic herb or something out there to bless us with even one baby. . I am also wondering if there is anything that I should avoid (besides clomid, of course, bc I really want a baby, so we are willing to risk it)??

I want to say of course if we ended up with twins on clomid we would be happy as well, just a LOT more worried. Does anyone know the percentages?

Thanks- I am new, and just hopping in here...

Welcome to SC

I don't think there is a way to prevent it from happening. Once you start using fertility drug/treatments there's always that chance.

In my case DH and I are hoping for twins...LOL

I thought that would be the case. I guess I should wait to see what happens before I worry one way or the other. I just don't know how to prepare for twins if that ends up being the case . I wish I could fast forward even a month....

Good Luck!

The percentage of having multiples on clomid is higher than if you weren't taking fertility drugs, but it isn't a guarantee by any means. I think it's like 10% chance of having multiples, which overall isn't that high.

BTW, I did Clomid and am only having one

I don’t think there’s a that much higher of a chance for twins on clomid as there is with injectables and so on. I guess if when they do your scan and you have more then 1 follicle you could just cancel the cycle but to me that’s just a waste. I also used clomid and am only having 1.

The chance of multiples is only 10% with Clomid. The chance of 3 or more is less than 1%. If you are really concerned about twins, see if your doctor is willing to monitor the cycle with ultrasounds. Then you will be able to see exactly how many mature follicles you have. If there is more than 1, you could choose to abstain from sex that cycle. It seems like a waste, though.

I am not positive, but I would wager that if you avoid getting a trigger shot and let the Clomid do its work, your risk of multiples could be a bit lower. I say this because the HCG triggers make your body release all mature follicles, if I understand correctly. But you may need the trigger.

Most of the women on here seem to get pregnant with singletons on Clomid. I did.

You guys are right. I think it would be a waste, too. Thank you for all of your advice and help. This board is so full of information. I am just going to go for it and see what happens. Thanks again! You all made me feel so much better.

Last- I am scared of that too!! I talked to my RE about it and he quoted me the same stats that were posted- 8-10% for twins and less than 1% for more than twins. He said that the chances for multiples gets much higher if you move on to injectables. I weighed the options and we decided to go for it too! I only want one at at time but I figure 2 is better than none!

I was on Clomid when TTC #1, and was a little worried about twins. When I was 11, I helped my mom babysit twins so I found out firsthand how much work was involved!

However, I would take twins in a heartbeat over no baby at all!

The second round of Clomid worked for me, and I now have an adorable 6 year old boy!

The paperwork my dr gave me states "The chance of having a multiple pregnancy is approx 5% with those almost entirely twins. Clomid has not been shown to increase the rate of congenital malformations and infant survival and performance after delviery is no different than that from spontaneous pregnancies. Also, the use of Clomid does not increase the chance of a miscarriage."

I took clomid twice. I had single births with both. Then with my last she was conceived on nothing. God obviously wanted us to have a third and she is such a blessing.
