    Question Clomid Questions

Dh and I have been ttc #1 for a year now with met and are finally ready to take the leap to clomid (I know that it's not THAT much of a leap, but it's a pretty big step for us). My insurance doesn't cover the cost of any infertility treatments, but my annual is scheduled for January and the obgyn said that she could write me a script when I come in (walmart sells generic clomid for just $9). The meds would be taken without any monitoring (u/s, bloodwork, etc.). My insurance no longer covers RE visits, so the obgyn is all I've got for now. We're trying to save money for more aggressive therapy, but don't have enough to really get started yet. I'm really nervous. Excited about the real possibility of a bfp, but scared of our limited timeline due to financial reasons. Dh and I can definitely afford to raise a child, but shelling out thousands for medical treatment hasn't been in the budget.

    1. How many cycles of clomid was your obgyn willing to prescribe without a referral to an RE?
    2. What was your initial dosage?
    3. What days did the dr. recommend you take it?

they tend to start you on 50 mgs a day for 5 days. If that cycle does not result in ovulation they will up your dose to 100 mg then again up to 150, I think 200 is max but most docs wont go to 200. There are prob women that have done 200 or even more but its NOT recommended. Anyway the usual treatment is 6 cycles that you actually ovulate with. So if you do 50 mgs and dont ovulate then try 100 and do ovulate you can do 100 usually for 6 cycles and not countthe non-ovulatory one.

Will the doc atleast run a p4 to check your progesterone level to verify ovulation?

For me 150 mgs is what it takes, though at one time 17 years ago clomid at any dose would not work for me, it took massive doses of injectibles and iuis to concieve. This current pregnancy took 5 cycles and an hsg to "flush" me out! I dont get progesterone levels done but only because i feel every O I have ever had and i consider myself a pro at charting so its not needed for me.

I wish you lots of luck and a fast bfp from whatever dose they start you on!

edited to add i do days 3-7 but also do NAC on days 1-7 and soy and vitex on days 1 and 2. I do met and baby aspirin as well.

Hopefully Clomid will be all you need. Sometimes it's enough to give hat nudge!

I didn't do u/s monitoring, but I did do a P4 (progesterone draw) on 7DPO when I managed to Ov. If I didn't Ov (I chart, so I know if I do or don't.) then I just started Provera or Prometrium to start a new cycle.

My ob/gyn was willing to do 6 rounds Clomid, and even injectables. But, since he's not a specialist who did extra schooling to know what he was doing... I did not feel comfortable sticking it out with him. I switched myself to an RE during my third round of Clomid.

I started at 50mg, and have went up to 200mg. I only Ov'ed once, on 100mg. This was also my only cycle with Metformin, so I believe that the Met was the added boost I needed. I'm back on it and hoping it works this cycle as well.

My doc's are CD3-7 believers. I myself sneak and take it CD2-6 sometimes. I did the Metformin cycle, and I Ov'ed.

I understand what you mean about being able to afford a child, but not the fertility treatments. It's hard to dish out up to $4,000 for one month of treatment... a kid doesn't cost that much a month. It always irks me when people say that if I can't pay for the treatments that I can't afford a child. They just don't get it. I'm slowly saving money for injectables, sometimes you have to do that. I'm going to be taking a break after this month, and saving my money. Hopefully when we try them they will work straight away, and we won't have to go through the process of saving the money again.

Anyways... Hope the Clomid works for you and you won't have to worry about any of it all. Best wishes.

Thanks for your responses and your support. I doubt that they'll do a p4 since all labwork has to be sent out to an independent lab. But I've temped most of the past year and feel pretty comfortable with it. According to my charts, I've o'd twice with met alone. From what I've read, clomid seems to have a better outcome for women who are able to o, even occasionally on their own (or at least without fertility meds). I've also read that many women respond better to the clomid and met combo (I've been on met since Dec. 07). My obgyn is very supportive but doesn't have any additional training beyond the basics. At my first visit, she spend an hour with me reveiwing my history and discussing pcos treatment options and research. She actually pulled out a laptop and showed me different studies that had just been released (all of which I had already read). The one thing I can say is that she was at least willing to listen and seemed willing to learn whatever she needed in order to provide the best possible treatment for me, within my comfort zone at the time. Dh and I have talked a lot recently about pcos, clomid, etc. He knows that I'm anxious about my appt., but he's very supportive. He even offered to go to the appt. with me, but I explained that I really don't need him to hold my hand for an annual. lol My appt. is Jan. 15th so the countdown has officially begun...

Thanks again for your support. I wouldn't survive this journey without my cysters!!!

I was on clomid for six cycles. 50mg and I did mine CD 2-6, although the doctor said 5-9. I have heard that taking it CD 2-6 or 3-7 will produce more follies and CD 5-9 generally will produce 1 good mature follie. In my case I just wanted a better chance at having more follies so I could hopefully catch 1 of them. I did get pregnant on my 6th round of 50mg clomid but I miscarried at 11 weeks, baby only measured 6 weeks though. And I did only have 1 baby bean in there. I have seen doctors do alot more than 6 cycles of clomid but its really not worth that because if you are ovulating with the clomid and still not pregnant in 6 cycles, they may be other reasons for not conceiving.
