I have PCOS (and am trying to get pregnant) and I will be starting to take Clomid in a months time. I have vaginal pain and tension on penetration and am aware that when you take Clomid, the nurse/doc does regular internal (vaginal ultrasounds) to monitor eggs, etc. vaginal ultrasounds are terrifying to me! Does anyone know if there is any alternative?? I' uncomfortable about anything big going in there. And how long does it take?
The wand used in transvaginal ultrasounds really isn't that big around...much less than your standard penis, actually. ;-) As for how long it takes: It really depends. For mine, they always started by taking a look at the uterine lining (the wand is pretty much straight for that), then looked at each ovary (they have to turn it to each side and you do feel some pressure). They don't insert the wand very deep, and I never found it to be a physically uncomfortable process (and the mental discomfort faded with each successive u/s). Anyway, when they didn't find follicles to measure, it was about a 3-minute process; when they DID find follicles big enough to measure, it took more like 4-5 minutes.
I recently had one done... It isn't what your thinking. The wand they use only goes in about 1 inch and usually the tech knows you are uncomfortable and they are really gentle and try to put you at ease b/c they know you are having it done b/c of a potential problem. Don't worry about it. Once I stopped freaking out about it, it was actually kind of cool to see what my doc is always looking at! Good Luck
I will be starting clomid soon too
Thanks girls for your reassuring replies!! You have set my mind at ease a little. All the best with the Clomid Amanda. I start in about 3 weeks or so so we can compare notes. Cheers.
When I first had one I was so upset-I guess I hadnt drunk enough water. Now it seems these are the only type I have. Last week ( at only a consult appt.) the DR was like " hey do you mind if I do a quick u/s). It doesnt hurt AT ALL! (And I wasnt prepared last week for it). He put a condom on it and some lube ( ew) but it wasnt a big deal at all. You will be ok-trust me-everythignhurts me and this was nothing. just a bit embaressing-but I swear the Dr. makes no big deal of it.
I know what you mean, I was absolutely terrified when I found out I had to have a vaginal ultrasound, the simpliest way for me as I am quite round:i_winkki but my husband came with me to ease my fears.
They knew I was uneasy with the procedure and had a young woman do it. She talked to me about what it was and talked me through it. It took about 5-10 mins for her to take all her measurements and then she got the male doc just come in and double check her measurements but not have to touch me. It made it heaps better that a woman did it, not that I am against male docs, my gyno is one, but it made me feel better that they had brought her in for me.
Its really cool to see everything aswell, different angle from a normal ultrasound.
Hope the clomid goes well ............ fingers crossed

I had a couple vaginal ultrasounds done on different occasions throughout the years. Basically to monitor my Cysts. I wouldnt say that the ultrasound wand is very big. It's actually not all that bad.. as for the time it all depends on what exactly they are doing, and how long the technician decides to take.. good luck, and no worries.

Yeah... I think the nurses do the ultrasounds at the clinic I go to (not the gyne) and all the nurses there are female so that should help. i feel more comfortable with a woman doing those kind of things too.
I've had so many, get used to them! Especially taking clomid and having pcos, I've had as many as two a week. You'll find though how interesting they are if they have a screen for you to see. You'll soon be able to tell what is what and if you are close to ovulating, how many eggs their are blah blah blah. I look forward to everyone I have just so I can see what is going on down there. Ease your mind, it's no different than having a pap, I think it's easier than a pap though. Someone said they only insert it in about an inch, that's not true, I feel it touch my cervix, but again, nothing painful. Bring someone along if that makes you feel better!!!
