Question Cloudy ultrasound?

Has anybody ever had trouble actually seeing their ovaries/follicles on an ultrasound? I had one the other day and it seemed difficult for my dr. to find the follicles.

I have also heard that you aren't supposed to drink carbonated beverages and eat certain food the night before an ultrasound because it causes gas and that can "cloud" the ultrasound as well.

Anybody hear of anything like this?

I actually went to school to be a cardiovascular technologist (ultrasound of the heart) and my mother is a diagnostic and cardiovascular tech and has done tons of abdominal ultrasounds on me.

I can tell you that a lot of things can affect how your ultrasounds appear. It could be the machine itself (changing the gain can make it clearer or fuzzier, changing the frame rate, etc.), sometimes it can be the transducer, sometimes there might not be enough gel for the sound waves to transmit properly through, thus making it harder to receive a clearer image.

Physically, there are a lot of things also. I didn't study transvaginal ultrasound, so dealing with that area specifically can be different and I don't know even close to as much as my mom does (I should give her a call later), but personally, I've had ultrasounds when one ovary altogether was harder to see and then the ultrasound two days later was just fine.

I'll call my mom later and ask her what can change the appearance on the physical aspect and let you know what she says. I'll also check my OB ultrasound books and see if that says anything.

Your bladder has a lot of affect on your u/s as well. My ovaries have been blocked by my full intestines several times. The tech always asks me if I need to empty my bladder before an u/s just to make sure my ovaries are in good view.

Thanks, NannonMS... I would love to know what you find out. and MahoganyJazz, I also heard about the bladder thing so I went before the ultrasound but it didn't help much. I wonder if they were just hiding behind my intestines.

Also, do you think weight can affect the ultrasound image?

It can, but that's usually why transvanginal, probe type u/s are better. Also, when they seem hard to find, I suggest pressing down and kind of kneading your pelvic area like you would a ball of dough. This has also helped find mine.
