I've been so tired lately, that I feel I really need a cup of coffee in the mornings. I usually avoid it. But I've read that one cup is not considered harmful. However, is that true where Met is concerned? Is caffiene ok?
Thanks ladies!

I haven't read anything that says its not okay to drink coffee. I just started Met last Saturday on 850 mg, and I've had about one cup of coffee most mornings since then and haven't had any adverse effects. However, I haven't had any side effects at all since going on Met (I guess I'm one of the lucky ones), so I'm not sure how coffee would affect someone who was prone to the side effects. Maybe not at all since I don't think there's any bad carbs or sugar in it?
Diamond~~I have been on 1500mg of met since aug/05 And I am a caffiene addict...I drink 2-3 cups of java a day and have at least 1 can of coke...(I know I should be taken out back to woodshed and browbeated!!!)My s/e are pretty much on par with most of the cysters here,,So I don't think it drastically effects a gal....Any other insights?..Kim
Kimal - how has Met helped you since August? I've been on it for about a month now, and I got af six days into it (although I had been waiting about 3 months for it), and these last couple of weeks I have really been having strong menstrual aches and pains.

caffeine in moderation is ok, but it can hamper insulin control for IR people. Which is why I have a small protien snack before I have a coffee since I am IR.
High circulating insulin is the reason why my labs didn't budge for so long on metformin...the first year on the drug I couldn't figure out what was going on. When i started eating and drinking to control my blood sugar, my hormones went down to normal ranges (after almost a decade out of control). I was counter-acting the drug with the way I was eating and so I will never just down a coke or a coffee without thinking again. What goes in our mouths is a huge component or PCOS.
Good luck!

Do you find that coffee alone causes a problem for you or is it the overall way of eating? I've generally cut out refined sugars and am just starting to learn about the balance of protein to carbohydrates so I can integrate that, but was it an overall dietary change for your or do you think coffee alone has a significant effect?
I'm just curious because you seem to have a very good handle on this and I'm still trying to learn about it all.
diamond~~Since I've been on Met my cycles have started to regulate..AF used to come when she felt like it (30-90) days and now my cycles are approx 30 days..I'm ttc so In that aspect,Met is awesomeNow I have to go on Clomid so I can "o"..I wish you luck on your Met journey..Kim
Diamond~~Oh yeah,,I felt some pretty odd feelings "down there" since met too..Weird pinching cramps,,sometimes it feels like someone is popping bubblewrap"down there"My menstrual cramps are pretty much the same though..Hope that helps..Kim
I am into my second week of Metformin 500mg, and finding it really difficult. I feel like I am going to throw up all the time, and I can't bear coffee!!! This is a big deal to me, as I can't get through the morning normally without one!
Oh can't believe I didn't see the replies to this thread!!
Lobam, thanks for resurrecting it As far as your nausea goes, this is normal. I felt the nausea right away when I started Met. It eventually goes away, but I will have bad moments every now and then.
I started a B12 vitamin as well, as I've read Met can cause a difficiency. I'm just getting over a sinus infection now, but I am feeling more "energized" since I started this thread. I have been able to go several days at a time w/o coffee in fact.
Kimal, I'm glad the Metformin has been regulating you, but how do you know you aren't ovulating on it? If you are getting your period regularly, and feeling all those twinges, etc., maybe you are? As far as I know, I am ovulating now. I had a progesterone test done last cycle, and it came back at 29.1 (I took the test on the evening of day 25, instead of the typical Day21, because my cycles have been 33 days long).

diamond~~I keep track of my bbt..My dr never sent me for progesterone testing(cheap bugger). But to the best of my knowledge I did'nt "o" or if I did it was weak or random,,which makes ttc pretty hard..I have taken my first rx of clomid this month, and I gotta tell you,The feelings "down there" are sooo different..I've had cramps before, but not like this. They don't really hurt, but instead of the dull achy pms type cramps, the are short, sharp and stabby..add to that TMI: my nips are in soo much pain and I'm only 8dpo!!It could just be an estrogen surge from the clomid causing it..but I can still hope..I have no regrets taking clomid..now that I've rambled on....How are you?..Kim
