Has anyone had Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)? I've got a referral from my doctor as another option to treat my depression, I know that there will be a very long wait for it on the NHS, so I'm not expecting an appointment any time soon but just wondering if it had (or hadn't) helped anyone and get a bit more of an idea of what to expect.
Thanks.

Yes, CBT is used in my therapy sessions. It works well, especially for those who are hesitant to use medication or want something to accompany it. It is also good for those who are depressed but not enough to warrant medication.
It is not for everyone, though. You have to be open to new ideas and not resist things your therapist might suggest.
HTH!

Since you may have to wait til you get an appointment, why don't you get some info about CBT and try some (emotional) exercises on your own while you are on the waiting list.
I can recommend a really good book: The Feeling Good Handbook (or just the regular version, also called Feeling Good) by David D. Burns, MD. It uses CBT techniques, explains CBT, and gives you lots of "homework" ideas. You can probably get the book at Amazon.uk.
CBT is basically a systematic way to learn to change your thinking patterns. The theory: if you change how you think, you can change how you feel.
I found that CBT was a very good tool to use once I had my basic depression under control. With PCOS, my hormones are probably messing up the brain circuits on a physical level, too. Mood drugs made the big difference for me, and then I was able to take advantage of CBT.
I have had CBT and it works wonders. The brain is capable of so many things, good and bad. Once you train it to stop doing certain damaging things, life gets a lot better. I also take antidepressants, but would never have gotten as far as I have w/o my counselor. We also do biofeedback, analyzing my BP and heart rate, learning to control both. Good luck to you with whatever treatment you try.

I had CBT last year when I had sessions with my psych nurse. I found that it worked well and has helped me change or I should say challenge my negative thoughts. I challenge my negative thoughts it seems like everyday, but I am managing to keep my depression at bay (am on Citalopram as well), and feel in control now. Hope it doesn't take too long to get your appt.

I have OCD and have had it pretty bad. I went to therapy and they tried the cognitive behavior therapy, where everytime I had a particular thought I would have to snap an elastic band on my wrist. It did nothing for me. Therepay actually ,made me worde for some reason and I no longer go. MAybe you will have better luck...
I am having it now with my CPN, been trying this for around 10 weeks now... I can see to some extent it has helped me but it's also made me question how I act and put some things into light about how I can move on!
