Unhappy Cold Sores = Misery

I was wondering if anyone else gets recurring cold sores? You see, I just broke out in them ALL OVER MY LIPS I have my college graduation in a week, and I would be really upset if I looked like Quasimodo in all of my pictures! Does anyone have any advice about helping them heal ASAP?

Thank you so much!

Have you tried Abreva? I would go get it quick. Also the vitamin Lysine helps but not sure if you already broke out. Also this is bad but I have popped the blisters with a pin before to speed up the healing process. Even put alcohol on it to dry it up. Hurts but worth it.

Thank you for the advice. I don't know about alcohol...EEP! That sounds incredibly painful.

My doctor prescribed me denavir and I've been applying it religiously, it's just not working as fast as I would like.

I second the Abreva idea. You can purchase it OTC at any drug store.

Have you talked with your dr about how frequently you're getting them? There is a an anti-viral drug called acyclovir/valacyclovir/valtrex that can be rx'd for recurring cold sores, although some dr's won't rx it for Symplex 1 (the kind of herpes you get on your mouth, which are a different strain then the type one gets on their genitals). You can also ask your dr about the cream version, which is an rx, and is applied on the sore once you break out. It helps hasten the healing process.

I'm not surprised that you got a cold sore given all that you have going on. Usually they'll appear when the body in under some sort of stress. Staying on a good multi-vitamin, eating well, and getting proper rest will all help as well.

I hope you have a great graduation! Congratulations!!

My doc gives me a prescription of Valtrex (genital herpes meds, since cold sores are herpes too) to take at the very first sign of cold sores. Usually it prevents it from ever appearing.

I do know that a recent study showed that 800 mg of ibuprofen works similarly and should be taken every 6 (I think, maybe 4 or 8) hours from the onset of the tingling, etc, until it is healed. Apparently, the ibuprofen can actually prevent them from appearing if you start early enough. Either way, it does seem to speed healing and help with comfort. There is apparently a hormone/chemical that is released when a cold sore is about to appear and the ibuprofen helps counteract that.

I second the Lysine. My mom gets them frequently, and usually taking Lysine will clear them up in a few days.

Wow, thanks so much for the wonderful advice everyone! I had no idea that ibuprofen helped cold sores.

I think I may go to the doctor next week because my outbreak is quite severe. Instead of having a few large sores...I have tiny ones all over my lips and they hurt very bad. I've actually never had this kind of an outbreak before.

The key point to Denavir or Acyclovir is to apply it as soon as you feel the first little twinge of a fever blister otherwise they are not really all that much help. I know that if I can get it on immediately then my outbreak is significantly less than when I miss it. Good luck.

I have not had one in so long and I hope my posting to this thread doesn't bring me bad luck but just in case I will get the Denavir ready

www.sotainstruments.com They have a silver pulser and magnetic pulser. It will cost 550 to buy both machines but I have not had a cold sore since I started using them. They are things of the past. Depending on the strain of the virus and your immune system, Lysine helps as well. You have to take 3000 mgs a day though in the beginning.
Stop eating foods high in arginine. Google argninie and find out what those are.

PM me and I can tell you all about those machines. How often to use them and all that. The FDA hates these machines, but they work. I save money on Rx now since I dont need medicine. Now, if I stop using the machines, I may get an itch, but if I use them consistantly, twice a week I can drink wine, eat chocolate, sleep 4 hours and never get a tingle. The 550 is worth the investment, believe me.

I use Carmex along with Abreva ... for some reason Carmex seems to help dry them out a little bit! Good luck, I had a cold sore at my college graduation last week, and I was super self-conscious about it in my photos, but it thankfully didn't show up very well.

use the stuff your doctor prescribed, but also you can get some stuff called L-Lysine from the herbal remedies section at walmart and it's SUPER great. There's also a stuff called Herplex and it's an herbal pill that you take 3 pills 3 times a day during a break out. If you use all three medicines together, it should clear up pretty fast. I get cold sores all the time.. they're no fun!!
